just the worst day ever

Recommended Posts

After successfully integrating my new girls with my 2 Omlet ladies, I just was starting to enjoy the daily egg collection when disaster has struck.

This morning I discovered my favourite girl, Amber, standing in the run in very poor shape. Her intestines were hanging out a long way and she looked like she was gasping a for breath. It's the worst thing I have seen in a chicken. I had to crawl in to reach her at the back of the run, lift her out and we put an end to her misery.

I don't understand how it happened. She seemed healthy and had been laying for a week or so. She did seem to take a long time to produce an egg, in and out of the nest box all the time. Would it have been a prolapse that was made worse by the others pecking?

I am devastated. I have lost 5 out of 9 chickens over the last 2 years for very different reasons and this was the worst of them all.

Hi Urbanchick,

The same happened to my Martha, so I can appreciate how devastating it is for you. You did the right thing helping her on her way.

My Martha was also very young, and had only been with us a few weeks, she laid us 3 eggs before we lost her. I think it was just a problem with her egg laying development and just a tragedy of nature.

Sending you lots of hugs

Debs
