Reikiranf
About half an hour ago we heard a loud bang as if someone had hit our front door ( it's a full length double glazed door) So we went to see who it was and found the inside glass had shattered, I wasn't too cross at that stage as it looked lovely with the sun shining through it Then we phoned our insurance company only to find that they have Aviva answering their calls but they cannot access our details and told us to call back tomorrow What is the point of them taking calls when they cannot do anything to help They couldn't even confirm that we would be reimbursed if we got someone in to make it safe. And here's the worse bit DH has cut up the girls shower curtain run cover and taped it over the inside of the door Sorry for the rant I shall now count to ten Amanda
Ain't Nobody Here
Did it just shatter spontaneously ? That is pretty poor customer service . I hope you have more luck tomorrow . (I think OH owes you a nice new shower curtain .)
Patricia W
Oh your poor thing! Can you contact them by email at all? I wonder if you sent them an email saying you have tried to contact them and failed and that in the interests of safety (not only someone breaking in, but the danger of broken glass) you have had to make emergency repairs. You may find that if you contact a 24hour glass repair service, they will know if you are likely to get your money back. I would have thought so. ( Having said that, my OH always fixes everything himself as he says it's too much hassle and it'd only cost more because of the excess and the higher charges next year...) Whatever you decide, make sure he replaces the girls' cover! Tricia
Guest
Surely they must have an emergency line?? What if you got broken into after this ..will they pay out. Ask to speak to a senior manager tomorrow and tell them you are not happy Hope you get it sorted out at least you were at home & not away on holiday. Not a good advert for us to know. indie
Reikiranf
Yes ANH it happened spontaneously, I think perhaps the metal frame expanded in the heat and put pressure on the glass causing it to shatter. We are with Saga Insurance, yes dear reader I married an older man I thought I'd let you all know so that you can avoid them, ermm Saga that is not the older men We will definitely be changing our insurance as we think it's ridiculous that they don't offer 24/7 help I've since googled reviews on them and they scored very badly getting only 1.3 out of a possible 5. So when we look to change insurer I shall check reviews and whether they have 24 hour cover for policy holders. Oh well live and learn I suppose, Thank you all for your replies, DH will be phoning them first thing in the morning, I'll keep you informed as I'm now thinking it's Saga by name saga by nature Amanda
Snowy
Hmmph. We also got rid of Saga a couple of years ago (older hubby here too ) They did sort us out eventually, but not impressed with their customer service Hope you get hold of them soon. BarbaraJ
We have direct line and had a metre window explode like that, though stayed intact on 1 side of double glazing. they didn't have proper pain straight away with curved plastic strip in so replaced with plain pane till it was made specially. Couldn't fault them though i didn't call out for emergency as we still had a window, or 1/2 of one!
sjp
sounds like it was badly fitted, toughed glass very rarely brakes due to heat unless its to tight in the frame or there a pressure point on the edge the edge and corners being the weakest part I fit windows for a living and most of them have safty glass in them, toughed and laminated it's nearly always the lami that brakes, unless the edge get knocked
Reikiranf
The door was fitted in 1982 before we bought the house! I'm waiting for someone from the insurance company to come along and look at it today, DH phoned me to say that Saga have said that if there is no obvious damage that caused the door to shatter and it just "happened" they will not pay for the repair We did hear a loud bang as if something had hit the door so we don't know if that was just the glass breaking or whether something did hit the outside of the door in which case what are the chances of the inside pane breaking from an external force! Anyone know? Would be good to have something to say to Saga as I can't help but think that they're going to try and wriggle out of paying for it. Lesley
We had a patio umberella caught by the wind, it flew upwards and hit the outside of a Velux window - the inside pane cracked, not the outside.
Happy chickens!
Horrifying that they can leave your house insecure overnight - would you have been covered for a burglary? Hope all sorted now.
Reikiranf
A guy came along and measured up for a new sealed unit and stuck film over the glass to make it safe, so now we just have to wait to hear if Saga accept his quote. Looking on the bright side, I phoned a local double glazing company and gave them the size of the glass and the price they quoted me is only £20 more than our policy excess not the hundreds of pounds I was expecting it to cost So if we do have to pay for it at least it won't bankrupt us. Rhesus
If I'm reading this right, I'd be surprised if Aviva or SAGA refused cover, although I do not know the extent of your cover. I work for the industry and in the claims field (though not Aviva or any of their familiy of companies). Houshold policies usually have a glass and sanitary ware section. Aviva & SAGA do this and it provides Accidental cover for fixed glass. If, from what you describe, the glass is in your front door, then it shouldn't matter what the cause is (the policy will refer to a peril) as Accidental Cover is just that. So long as it is fortuitous to you (ie you didn't break it yourself - and why would you) then there is little reason not to pay. What you might want to do is decide if the cost of replacing the glass yourself slightly over the excess is better than claiming and having your premium increased at renewal. Hope this helps you a little...
Reikiranf
Having heard nothing at all from Saga DH phoned them today and they told us they will not cover the cost of the repair So obviously the company they use for repairs overcharge them as we got an estimate that was only £20 more than our excess. I'm now fuming again as had they had the decency to tell us they weren't going to pay out we could probably have had it repaired by now Lesson 1. We've learned it doesn't pay to be honest Had we lied and said that the door slammed and the glass broke they would have paid out on accidental damage but not what they call an act of god. Lesson 2. Do not use Saga for home insurance. Amanda
