eating your own petit gris!

Recommended Posts

there's an article in this month's 'home farmer' telling you how to prepare and eat snails from your back garden. It doesn't mention parasites though.

I love snails in garlic butter so would be willing to give this a go but don't garden snails contain parasites? As i say, the article doesn't mention how to check for them or get rid of them so i'm just a bit wary.

I read that article and I thought that the 'purge' process would make them fairly safe. That said though, there is NO WAY I could eat a snail. :vom: Sorry but, I am little bit odd about food. There is a pub/restaurant thing in town called 'The Slug and Lettuce' and I cannot, just cannot eat there, and thats just the name

When the author asked if she could do it, I said yes, so long as I didn't throw up. I don't like them either.

The purging process is a part of the clearing, but also, if the snails are very well cooked, reach a temperature over 80 C and have been completely cooked all the way through, they should be fine.

I suppose that, if you farm snails you would get them to be free of parasites after a few generations simply by breaking the life cycle of the parasite.

For me it comes down to the decision:

T Bone Steak verses Plate of Snail? Hmmm, no brainer that one.

I do like snail with loads of garliccy butter...mmmmm.

I'm not sure I'd fancy the DIY route, which is a bit pathetic really, but they seem much more - y'know - snaily than a foodstuff when you think about what it is you're eating! Which is pathetic I know, and not something I'd apply to other meats. Except for slugs.

I had snails when I went on the French exchange from school.

I always thought snails were just like chewy garlic.

I once ate mopane worms ... albeit smoked. They were :vom::vom::vom:
