sootem
I have today ordered an incubator! Can anyone let me know whether or not they vaccinate their chickens please! Susanx
Redwing
I don't The quantities that vaccinations are available in and all the different ones available make the cost too high for the hobby keeper/breeder who only have a few chicks at any one time Also some vaccinations are given as a spray on dose meant for sheds full of chickens and no one has thought about how that translates small scale Most hybrids you buy will be vaccinated and most pure breeds will not be as traditionally they come from the smaller scale breeder although some breeds prone to certain conditions such as marecks may have been vaccinated against those
thebdj
Are vaccinations commercially available to hobby keepers for things such as Marek's disease? Whilst I have chosen not to vaccinate mine, this was largely due to being under the impression that I would need to get this done by a vet at quite some cost. If I could acquire things myself, I would be tempted to do it. Justin
Egluntyne
You could enquire at your vets. The are usually available on an industrial scale only and might be costly.
Griffin
My 'normal' vet is useless with chickens but a specialist avian vet was recommended to me by another forum member. He's great and has said that I can buy the Mareks vaccine from him if I wanted to, a bottle of it costs £30 and is enough for 100 chicks however once mixed it only lasts for six hours so it's only cost effective if you have a large number of chicks. Silkies and Sebrights are particularly susceptible to Mareks and if I hatched more than 10 Silkies at any one time I'd probably invest in it. sootem
I agree with Justin - i think I will ask my vet about Marek's vacine. Thank you everyone. Susanx
