Anybody used Miscanthus?

Recommended Posts

Just been to Cornwall Farmers to get a bale of Aubiose & they didn't have any! Said that they're having a job to get hold of it at the moment.

Now that Hemcore have gone bust- can't get that either, so she suggested Miscanthus. It looks like the same sort of stuff- cheaper too and it's got eucalyptus oil in it but she couldn't tell me how absorbent it was.

Just wondered if any of you have used it and what you thought of it...

I used some a while back as we have a local farm sells it on ebay - it's good stuff, I found it as good as hemp for the run and the hens loved scratching around in it. Some bits of it are quite thick though, like chopped up garden canes, so I don't know how well it's going to rot down in the compost. That's a major consideration for me when I choose bedding - I'm currently using Bliss (chopped rape straw) as I think that will compost well.

At that price it's worth giving it a go, I paid £5 a bale. I did read somewhere though that as a crop miscanthus is not very environmentally friendly so if that is a concern to you it would be worth reading up on it. I can't remember the exact problem though!

Thanks for the feedback... the composting issue is a bit of a worry- I've already got 4 heaps on the go!

Think I'll give it a whirl though- my girls take great pleasure in booting everything out of their run so I'm well used to that! I'm just hoping that the poo's will get absorbed as easily as aubiose.

Shall let you know how I get on! :D
