kackness
One of our bantam hens died recently leaving us with a lone hen. Is it at all possible for a hen to live a happy life by itself? Or is that cruel? We seem to be locked into a cycle - one hen dies, we buy another to keep the survivor company, then the survivor dies and we have to buy another hen to keep the new hen company...on and on it goes, hens stretching out into eternity... Can anyone on the forum advise us?
Tweety
Hi, so sorry to hear about your hen dying. The only way to avoid the situation is to get 2 new hens to introduce to your surviving girl. It is not recommended to keep one hen alone - they really need to be part of a flock, however small. Hope you can find a couple of friends for your lone girl. CluckyBucks
I agree, i think this would put a stop to the cycle and your hen would have more company. Sorry to hear about your hen dying xx xx
Olly
Sorry to hear about your hen dying. I agree with the other advice though, get two hens and then hopefully you will 'break' the cycle. A single hen will be lonely, and would be happier with a friend or two.
Leicester_H
Hi I had same problem. Within a few DAYS the lone chicken was clearly not happy. Stayed in eglu - unless I tempeted her out. She hasn't got on well with her 2 new 'sisters' (yet)but thats another story. - she is clearly happier now she has company. H
