Rubber chippings

Recommended Posts

Hi

We have just read the latest copy of Practical Poultry and there is a suggestion there that rubber chippings on top of weed control mesh make a good base to put the chicken run on. The author said it was a one off cost and the chillpings could be hosed down to clean them up. We currently use wood chips (having tried Auboise and not really getting on with it) which are fine but do need replacing on a fairly regular basis. I was wondering if anyone else has had an eglu or cube on these rubber chippings and how have they found it?

Thanks, Lindi

Hi,

Yes, I have had my run on rubber chippings for 3 months now and am really pleased with it.

My run is on paving flags, so the chippings just sit on top of those.

I find so long as I keep them dry they are great, and the poo isn't a problem, it just seems to disappear.

I hose them down about every 6 weeks.

I can only recommend them. Very easy to manage.

Good luck!

Alma :D

This is the third thing on them in PP this year, plus there is also an advert for them in PP. The original article (seller) is Alison Wilson - I think the idea put forward is to use a weed surpressant type mesh under the chippings, so they do not get stirred up with mud/soil, but when hosed it still soaks away. As with any solution on a permanent site I would still use a poultry sanitiser on a regular basis as hosing down will not kill any underlying infections.

If you have access to the previous PP you may wish to read the letter raising concerns about the use of rubber chippings as well. I have no experience of using them, but think that there are probably pros and cons. If you don't have access to the previous PP let me know and I'll dig iut the letter for you.

Some of you have said this has been discussed before. When I made a search of the Omlet forum I couldn't find the thread so if you could point me in the right direction that would be great.

Thanks, Lindi

There was a thread over on the eglu/cube section, but may have been part of another thread, probably last winter. It has been discussed before in PP - this is the 4th edition to have something about it. 1. intitial article by Alison Wilson 2. a very negative response to article 3. a letter of response to the response by Alison, then this latest letter asking for more discussion on the topic.
