Dirty Bottom - should I bath her?

Recommended Posts

Hi there

Daisy one of my light sussex has got a really manky bottom/knickers  she looks to hav a bit of a sore patch developing, not helped by our orpington cockeral who has just discovered the girls!!!! (well he was Mabel until 2 weeks ago!!!!). To get to the point, should I give her a bath and spruce up? Was thinking on putting a bit of purple spray on to cover the sore bit as well. What do you think? I don't want to distress her.

Also looks like we might have to rehome Colin the cockeral as he really is finding his voice, sadly during the night when the cat sets the security light off, oops!!!!

Thanks

Oh sorry about Colin, hope something works out for you. As for washing dirty bottoms, yes. Ive just come in from washing 3 of them. Unfortunately some of the err 'dirt' had dried and you have to sort of rub/pick it off the feathers, then i just rubbed her with a sponge and then gave them a quick blast with the hairdryer, they love it  Good luck

She might find a bathed bum rather soothing. Just make sure you dry it well - one of mine loves the blow drier up the bottom! Luckily I haven't needed the purple spray - any cuts get covered with wound powder, and sore botty bits have had Vaseline - but depending on how sore your girl's bottom is, it probably is advisable to spray.

I think you might need to check for lice around the feathers or worm them if you haven't done so just in case. There are other things that cause mucky botties too, which I gather can be sorted with yoghurt (which mine hate  ) in their food - I'm only a beginner relatively speaking, but I'm sure Egluntine and Claret or the other peeps will be able to advise better.

I sympathise with you re Colin. Had a similar problem with one of our girls - he was obviously disguising himself until the last moult. I was hoping he would be the silent handsome type.

Thanks for the replies. I bathed her last night, she has very red skin but not broken anywhere, no sign of mites. I dried her off with the hair dryer then covered all of the red areas with violet spray that has aloe vera in it. She has lost alot of feathers but this has been ongoing for months, otherwise she is well and definitely a happy girl! I wormed them all 2 weeks ago.

As for Colin.............Crowing at 3am!!!!!!!!

have you tried a cockerel box for Colin?

We put Basil to bed in a cat carrier in the garage every night and he comes out at 8am every morning (or 10am the other morning when the children had neglected to let him out - poor soul). He never makes a sound until we let him out. It's early days but working so far
