Chicken friendly vet near Colchester?

Recommended Posts

I know this should probably be posted in the chicken clinic section but I know more people would be see this and be able to help. Feel free to move this if you disagree mods.

Came back from my holiday on sunday to find Babs in a bit of a state. My neighbour had been looking after my girls and done a cracking job. But Babs is prone to softies, bless her, and must have had some trouble before i got back. I came home to find my other two girls with bloody beaks where they had been pecking Babs' botty. So now she's got purple knickers (From the gentian violet purple spray) and is in my new hospital wing of my new run (God bless Aviaries 4 u!) I was hoping she'd improve but still looks like she does when trying to pass a softy - all hunched and depressed. I have life guard in her water, limestone flour in her feed but I think she's egg bound with broken egg inside her. (Why is always your favourite pet that takes a turn for the worst when you go on holiday?) I've washed her bott on sunday and yesterday to sooth her scabs where the girls had pecked her and have noticed what looks like cooked egg around her vent, i think some shell from a broken egg is still inside her. She also passes only small amounts of poop surrounded by lots of watery matter - and that too is caking all over her knickers.

So it's the vet tonight for poor Babs.

I've taken a previous chook to the vet near me (Pets at home) and i appreciate she was poorly and was then PTS but i got a vibe from the vet that he didn't seem too fussed about my chicken. It felt like I knew more than he did!

Does anyone know a chicken friendly vet near or in colchester, Essex (And preferably one that doesn't charge almost £40 to put down a chicken!) that may offer some hope to poor Babs?

Thanks guys xx

A friend told me about Colne Valley Practice near the Hythe in Colchester - they have a bird specialist. Sadly he was on holiday.

At least Colne Valley Vets in Colchester only charged me £19.10 to have her PTS and 'taken care of' whereas Pets at Home in Colchester charged me £40 last time - with me taking my girl home to 'dispose of' myself.

((((((HUG)))))

oh i'm so sorry to hear that :(

£40 is outrageous

I know the Hythe area well...it has been revamped since I lived there I believe.

Just love your amazing painting of Babs...you've got talent...I can just about draw stick men...honestly!

RIP Babs
