Car for learner driver

Recommended Posts

Hi, don`t know if I can pick your brains but ES is 17 in a couple of weeks and is desperate to learn to drive.

Anyone recently insured a boy (expecting it to be loads more than a girl)?

Do I put him on my insurance as a named driver?

We are thinking of getting a really cheap car for him to learn in, (any ideas?),not for him, as he wants to go off to uni so we would sell it again.

Do we insure it in his name even though it wouldn`t technically belong to him?

Help please!!

Am completely unsure of what to do, and you all seem to give out loads of good advice.

THANKS!!!! (In advance) :D

Sue, my DD saved up her part time wages and bought her own car, a lovely little Corsa.

She also has the car policy in her name with DH as a named driver, through Churchill. Some insurance companies will let them have the policy in their name even though they are not the owners and keeper of the car but you would need to check. We did it this way as it was ££££'s to add DD as a learner driver onto our car, which is only a Mazda 323 so not some lovely fancy thing!

Word of advice though is do not touch Quinn. They will come out with the cheapest quote to start off with but as many have found out they quite often want to triple the price when they pass!! Definately check with anyone if they will increase the premiums when they pass.

i am 17 and recently brought a skoda felicia. i spent about £1500 but this was a higher spec model and so you can easily get them for under £1000 if you look around. i jhave had over 40 insurance quotes all being fr my own policy and the cheapest i have been given is £2000, so what i have done is changed the registered owner to my dad and then i will be put on as an addtional driver when i pass, as my mum and dad will be driving it as well. sorry about the long post and i hope it helps.

oh, and adrian flux is quite good for quotes

I have a son who we insured lowest quote we have and have stayed with on renewel is company called Quinn Direct.

I have two boys and this was recommended by someone else with two boys.

I understand that girls insure for a few £100 less!

Hello,

If your adding him as a named driver and a learner it won't be to bad as long as the car has a low insurance rating (see here for ratings: ratingshttp://www.thatcham.org/abigrouprating/index.jsp?page=343)

It's when he passes and wants to start building no claims, it will cost a fortune!

Thanks for all the advice, you lot are brilliant!!

I think we will try to get a group 1 type car, possibly an old corsa (seem like one of the most reasonably priced) and insure it with him as a named driver.

Think we will wait until he`s had a few lessons first though (I`m not very brave!!!) :anxious:

I`ve got an xtrail so no chance of insuring him on that!

:anxious:

If he ever passes his test I will have to ask you for advice again  (hope you won`t mind  )

We insured our 17 year old as a named driver on OHs policy, still just short of £1000, but the cheapest we could get. I think it was with Churchill. He had at least 6months of lessons though first. We wanted him to be confident before he started driving us about and now we use him as a chauffer so he gets lots of practice. (just wish he'd take his test though, he keeps putting off doing the theory  )

We've got a corsa that myself, my DD and ES drive and once ES passed they (Quinn) wanted ££££ more money. I managed to get us on with Direct Line for only about £200 more than we were paying whilst he was learning.

We've recently been thinking of selling the car as the kids argue when DD is back from uni and everyone wants to use the car at once. If we gave DD half the value of the car to put away (she doesn't need a car at uni) and then ES took over ownership of the car (I have a big car that I can drive) then his premium is something like £2,300

I think we might sell the car and then he can buy a cheaper car with half the money and hopefully the insurance should be lower.

Morning Seagazer - just you and me up at this unearthly hour I see!

We bought a Suzuki Alto from new 3 years ago, cheap and cheerful, with the intention of giving it to him when he passes his test. It's up to him whether he keeps it or upgrades it. Unlikely to be able to upgrade due to lack of finances and it's hardly a boy racer car (0 - 60 in half an hour) so should be relatively cheap for him to insure.

I got a Nissan Micra when I turned 17, took out a policy where I was the names driver and my dad was an 'add on' ( ) and it was about £630 whilst I was a learner.

Love the car, and couldn't recommend it enough (even though everyone at school said it wasn't a "cool car" )
