Chickens and drinking water advice please

Recommended Posts

Hi

We have an eglu and 3 chickens, we've only had them not even 3 weeks yet, so we're still learning!

First of all, I put their water in the eglu water feeder, but I found that most of the water tipped out when I attached it to the eglu, leaving very little water in the bottom of it.

Then I bought a plastic water feeder - a round cylinder thing that sits on the ground - but literally half an hour after I've filled it with fresh water, they have managed to kick dirt into the trough and the water is then undrinkable. So I'm changing their water more than once a day at the moment, its not ideal.

I've noticed they like a drink, especially in the morning so I just want a vessel that will work without these problems.

What is the solution?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello there, and welcome to the world of chicken keeping! It's fab :D:D:D

You can use the glug and just fill it from a watering can that way there's no sloshing about!

You can put your other one higher, such as on a log,

At the moment I am also using a large drinker that rabbits use  the kind that hang upside down and they drink from the little metal spout!

Hope this helps :)

The eglu Glug should be ok, its ok raised up a little they can still get water from it just fine, but they still get wood chippings in there somehow lol. It does hang slightly lower on one side, and a little will drip (but they like the drips and pool it creates too. But be gentle with it and you don't lose much, and there's plenty in there for them. We also add a little Citricidal stuff in there too.

Just put it nearer the door if its the reach issue, that causes tipping and spillage.

But we've had no trouble, it is the standard Eglu with glug and grub isn't it?

With the Omlet water container you can hang it on the run then fill it through the wire with a watering can that has a long spout.

I changed from the superglug when it broke with the frozen water last year and had the same problem of bedding being kicked into the water so I have put it up on some slabs and that has kept it clean. Don't put it on the part of the run facing the house because they will jump onto it and use it as a lookout post and spill it again.:D

Thanks.

I've looked at the website and it seems my eglu glug is not exactly the same design as the more recent eglu glugs. The openings do actually point slightly towards the floor once its attached, hence most of the water spilling out. Or rather the openings are just wider. I've noticed that with the more recently designed glugs, the openings are facing upwards. The openings are smaller with the bottom half of the glug being able to hold a lot more water than mine.

My eglu is borrowed from a friend and is minimum 3 years old.

Anyway I'll get there!
