Anyone else with poor leeks this year?

Recommended Posts

We started good and early and went into their final positions in good time but they have gone all brown and straggly. We wondered about rust and leaf miner and would like to know if they are worth leaving in the ground?

We normally just plant them too late and end up with leeks in April but this year everything was going well until recently and now they look like dry thick grass :(

My leeks are poor but then they only cost £1 for a whole pot of seedlings because they were a bit past the planting date. They started off reasonably well but some of the leaves look like they have been chewed by something ie a bit stringy. But we haven't had any rain for weeks and I don't suppose that has helped. I'm just leaving them in and will see what happens.

There is a leek moth - it was on all allotment plots by us last year and we all lost our crop, this year we didn't bother growing them and it is here again - people are digging up and burning them. Apparently it hasn't been on our allotments for years, but once it strikes it is hard to get rid of.

The first year I lived with my OH I put a leek in the bathroom on April Fools Day and rushed downstairs saying 'Help! Help! There's a leak in the bathroom'. I still think this is hilariously funny. Strangely enough ...... "Ooops, word censored!"ody else does  But still together 23 years on :D
