Blood and white fluid from vent

Recommended Posts

Help.

I'm new to keeping chickens and I have a problem. One Miss Pepperpot didn't look that well last night (although she had laid that day) she was just picking at some sweetcorn when usually there is a frenzy for the food. She was a very slow this morning just stood in the run, and tonight she is hunched up in the eglu there is blood in the eglu, dried specks round her vent and white runny stuff coming from her vent. She has been wormed a couple of weeks ago. Can you help? I only had 3 chickens 4 months ago and have already lost one so don't want to loose another. Her pen mate had been pecking her and so that one wears a bumper bit so she hasn't been pecking her to my knowledge.

Hello, if its white diarrhoea it could be coccidiosis which can give blood in droppings, but it could also just be urine with urates she's passing.

Are you sure the specks are blood, I think lice can look like little brown specks around the vent. What happened to your other girl would that give you a clue?

Hope she has picked up in the morning. :)

There was bright red blood in the eglu so I think it is splatters of dried blood round her vent. Her vent actually feels swollen (I think, not sure I know what I'm doing I'll compare her to the other one tomorrow). Perhaps she has an egg stuck? Her symptons are similar to the other one who had to be put to sleep but that was 2 months ago. They had both been pecking her I think and the vet said the trauma to her vent was too much to repair. It's true that the current lady in distress has been picked on in the past but the culprit has calmed down alot with the bumper bit so I don't think it is her.

I've cleaned her up and put her in the cat basket in the kitchen for the night. She has had some water and a few pieces of cucumber so fingers crossed. Also I thought omlet chickens were vaccinated agains coccidiosis? Thanks for your help everyone I speak to who has chickens has never had any problems at all so this forum is a lifeline.
