Luvachicken
One day we noticed the glug had emptied itself because one of the nipples had got stuck. We sometimes need to leave the girlies for the weekend and i was worried the same thing might happen again. I could leave them an extra bowl of water but then they might fill this with soil- so how long can they last without a drink?
BocBoc
Oh heavens - I wouldn't risk it. New Glug time I think
Sarahsausage
Definately a new glug, you should never leave any creature without water
Lewis
Maybe just have a bowl of water in the run too incase the glug does stick again?
Redwing
Give Omlet a ring, I believe they sell the nipples spearately
C&T
Or get a "normal" glug, that attach's to the side of the run. They can't get as much dirt in there as a pot on the ground, and can't be knocked over. And it shouldn't leak!
quickcluck
I had the same problem, so we siliconed the nipples and now they drink from the top!
Mayo
. Hi luvachicken. . The answer to your question is : VERY few hours, and even then, it's not very kind. All living things need Constant access to water. M. . .
Lake Superior Chicks
I agree with all the answers above................I'm sure there is a scientific response but I have no clue what it is. A whole weekend without water?...........Disaster. Regarding leaving a extra bowl as a backup, don't worry about soil in the water, my chickens will drink out of a mudpuddle rather than their dish! Which brings me this to share. Did you know chickens prefer to drink out of open containers? They will actually dunk their heads in the water to wash their eyes! Yes! It's true When I learned of this I changed to all open bowl waterers. They seem to drink more and yes I have seen them dunk....no kidding! If it were me, I would have a backup system for sure. Lewis
We have a big white ceramic pot that they drink out of and they do dunk Did you know they can't swallow like us either - thats why they have to tilt their heads backwards when drinking and the water goes down with gravity
CluckyBucks
Hello I think i read somewhere that an egg is 80% water, so no water means no eggs. PLUS (the bigggest thing) your chickens could dehydrate, which would be awful. I would put a bowl of water or two in the run, all the soil will sink to the bottom anyway i suppose xx xx
quickcluck
Mine also use bunny bottles that you hang up by attaching to the run, could you try those?
