fighting cocks

Recommended Posts

Hi there!

I need a little advice about my boys!! I was given a orphan chick which has turned out to be an Avril cockeral!!! Before we found out, we thought it would be a good idea to get a friend for him as he/she was lonely, so we got a Bantum Sussex! To our dismay we have ended up with another cock! They get on most of the time, but they do fight and i do separate them! I would like now to get a hen or two, as i think that this would keep them from boredom, but what should i get??????? I woudn't get another Avril, but would a bantam suffer with such a powerful cock?

I so shoudn't have taken the chick in the first place, i really just wanted a couple of lovely girls, but was put in a place where i couldn't say no, but i do love the cocks!!

someone please give me some advise to keep my cocks happy, as i really don't want to part with them!!

Thanks!

Oh Wilba, poor you. I have been in your shoes a couple of times and whether they are contained or free they will fight. I think you will find that if you give each cockerel a couple of hens and keep each group seperate they will be fine. I know there will be someone else on the forum with much more knowledge than me to advise you.

Good luck with your boys. I am a great fan of "The Cockerel" :D

Unless you are very lucky, you'll have to keep them separately or they will fight to the death.

The only time I've heard of cockerels living together is when they have either been brought up together and one is definitely submissive, or they are out in a field with their own space and their own flock. Even then, most people have a divide between them.

Thank you for your advise, they were both only about 8 weeks old when they were put together, so most of the time they are fine and we have left them for a couple of days and they have been o.k! i just think that the Avril is getting frustrated and maybe needs a hen? but what hen? His mother wasn't a Avril. so maybe he has a softer side? He has started to get agressive with myself and my husband though, but if we pick him up he calms down?? I would get rid of him if i knew that someone wouldn't fight him, but because he has been hand reared he has a soft side, and i wouldn't want him hurt!
