Chicken beastliness

Recommended Posts

Has anyone had a real hard time introducing new girls to a well established flock and if so what tips or tricks are there for over-coming the appalling beastliness they can show to one another!

I brought two Miss Pepperpots into my flock of 5 about 6 weeks ago and the first ones have made a career out of making the new ones' lives a total foodless and drinkless misery. I had to go away to a funeral in the USA the day after the new ones arrived and I had to rely on a family member whilst I was away. Sadly when I came back the bottom chick had been pecked so badly that she had a hole in the back of her head where you could see the bone underneath. I have kept the two new ones separate for the last few weeks till she has healed up but let them free range together at weekends when I am there to over see. They have spent a few nights together (but there is always trouble in the morning before I can get there to let them out).

This is the worst case I have personally experienced of chick-hatefulness and I am a bit dismayed. I have done this before and you get signs of things settling down after a week or two but not here. I wonder if I should give up or whether they will really settle down in the end! Does anyone else have any other tips or suggestions please?
