Nogs
Hi there , Please could anyone recommend anywhere to buy Layers Mash I have been recommended to try it rather than the Omlet food they came with as they don't seem to be eating it, also to encourage their laying as two are now 25 weeks and still no eggs! I am in West London so I guess somewhere that delivers? thank you, Nogs
BeckyBoo
Hi Nogs, what sort of chooks have you got? Pure breeds won't start laying until the spring so you can only really expect eggs if you've got hybrids. And not sure where you live but lots of places that sell horse stuff sell chook food now. But to be honest mash is messy, and it's only pellets ground down. If they're not laying they won't be eating much, once they start popping out the eggs they'll start eating more so it might be more that they're not laying than they don't like the food. Plum
Hi my chooks came with omlet pellets and they didn't eat a lot to begin with but I think it was because they weren't laying yet rather than not liking the pellets. A grub would last the three of them almost a week. They went a lot quicker when they started laying.
sjp
cyclone was 26 weeks before she started to lay my 3 youngsters are about 28 weeks but I'm not expecting eggs of them now till march have a look at these two links the bootom one if you put your post code in they might have a local stockist or put layers pelletts/mash into a search engine http://www.garvo.eu/ http://www.smallholderfeed.co.uk/Find-a-Stockist.aspx

Falkor
I can highly recommend the 730 Garvo Layers Mash it's fantastic stuff. Me too! I feed Garvo Mash too! It is chunky and there is very little dusty stuff left in the feeder unlike other brands that I have tried. Any that is left I make into porridge with hot water and they guzzle it down The girls look great on it too! Sorry....I am not aware of a supplier of Garvo local to you but check out their website! Ness3103
i'm in Ealing and get my food from http://www.thehorsehouse.co.uk/ the chook stuff isn't on the website but they do smallholder pellets and mash, grit (you need to order that), bedding, corn, poultry spice, louse and red mite powder and lifeguard tonic. they also have the acv, limestone powder, cod liver oil and purple spray. not sure if they'd deliver chook stuff but you could ring them if it's too far for you to travel to. jomaxsmith
Hi Nogs, They should be on Grower's mash or pellets (which is probably what they came with) until they come into lay as the Growers helps them to, er, grow and mature. Once they've started laying, layer's mash contains more calcium to help them to lay strong eggs. As the others have said, they won't eat large amounts until they come into lay. To encourage them to eat what you give them don't give them (many) treats. Jo
Plum
I had my new girls on growers. They were 18 and 24 weeks but not laying. I read the bag last week and it said not to be given to chickens over 16 weeks due to containing coccidiastats (?sp) am panicking now especially as the old girls ate their food. It was a small print label of constituents sewn on. What do you reckon Jo?
jomaxsmith
ooo, don't know about that - I'm just going on what I was told by my local poultry centre. It is a worrying statement though. Hopefully someone else more knowledgeable will be along in a minute...

debbier
They should be on Grower's mash or pellets (which is probably what they came with) My hens came from Omlet with a bag of layers (not growers) pellets. I've given them both layers mash and pellets. As someone else has posted: the constituents are the same, but mash is more like a loose powder and pellets are like, um, pellets.
