Help Daizy is acting very strange

Daizy our hen has been acting very strange lately. First she seems very off balance and falls over when she jumps onto our step, and uses her wings to keep in balence when she turns. Secondly she stands in the middle of the lawn, droops her wings, puffs her feathers up and waves her heads in circles. She has been fine it is just this morning I noticed it.

Cilla our Ginger nut range seems fine even minus a tail. Im reallly worried, Has anyone else had this problem?

Errrm, I'm scratching my head about this one CraisyDaisy, I haven't come across any behaviour like this myself. Hopefully someone else will be along shortly with some sensible advice.

But with the head shaking and loss of balance thing I'd be tempted to check that she's not got any lice or other objects caught in her feathers around the head (in case the shaking is a way of trying to dislodge them :?:? ).

Is she eating and drinking OK? I know you've said she puffs her feathers up, but is she looking hunched and miserable, or is it just an intermittent thing?

I'd watch her, see if she is feeding and see how she goes.

I hope someone else has some good advice for you. Do let us know how she gets on :D

It could be an ear infection, can you see if her ear has a discharge, this can cause a chicken to lose balance the same as in humans, it says in my book that the bird may need antibiotics for the infection. So I would suggest looking at her ears and if there is a discharge take her along to the vet...........Good luck hope you get her sorted.

Hmm... here's a post from a few weeks ago on the same problem:

Here.

Nothing conclusive though. I would still go along the ear infection idea and get her to the vets.

PLEASE come abck and tell us of any results/ideas: Its so helpful for when this problem arises again with somebody else.

On a roll now:

Muppet81's chooks had an ear infection: Here's what they wrote:

We were really woried about Florence this morning so we booked her in with Eddie, our vet.

We took her tonight and he said she has a rather nasty parasitic infection in her ears. Fortunatley it has not got to her middle ear or her balance would be affected too.

He was wonderful with her. Very gently bathed her ears then put in some ear drops and massaged them to start to soften the build up of hard matter which had built up. He gave her some oral antibiotics too.

She already seems to be more comforatble. The yawning motion has been much less frequent.

Yes she seems to be drinksing and eating ok. I have't had chance to check her ears yet so Ill check that as well. She might just be a bit off colour with the cold weather. Also she seems much more moody with our rabbit, smudge. She is usally best friends with him, but when he tried to play with her today, by running in circles she pecked him everytime he came near. Very odd. She is acting more like our Ginger Nut ranger, Cilla. She hates the rabbit.:?:

I know it sounds strange this time of the year, but could she be broody? My Audrey was wobbly for ages and used her wings to balance her. It looked as if she was trying to protect an imaginary lot of chicks underneath her. She was eating, drinking etc, but just wouldn't get up fully on her legs! I tried allsorts! I squirted her back end with cold water, dunked her back end in cold water. I gave her a health checked - pulled her wings outstretched, checked her legs etc.

I then gave all chooks a going over with louse powder just incase. I put poultry spice in with the pellets and they had poultry drink in their water. But I guess it was just broodiness. Your chook sounds very similar!

She sound like she could be broody. But, she is laying fine. ?????. I spent ages dpoing t-touch on her today. T-touch for those who have't a clue what I am talking about is sort of massage invented by Linda Tellington. It is mostly used on horses, but the chooks and rabbit love it. It carms them down and they bond with you. Have a look on her website . http://tteam-ttouch.com/. It is really good and can beifit everyone. Tell me how it works.

Apart from being even carmer Daisy is still slow and acting rather odd, but no sign of an ear infection.
