depressed chickens :(

Recommended Posts

hi

two of my chickens have been acting a bit depressed lately. On sunday my maran was standing away from the other hens with her head tucked into her chest looking downright miserable, she stayed like this for about 20 minutes. Despite my best efforts to move her back near the other cooks, she still went back into that same position. My brahma has also been acting differently lately as she has strangly been unsteady on her feet for the past few days and has been much less lively than normal. Any ideas whats wrong and what i need to do to make them better?!

they havnt started laying and are too young to moult. Grrr, that is so annoying! I was going to buy some verm-x this weekend!!!! Where can you buy flubenvet from? i havnt seen it in any farm shops.

It is a prescription only medicine, but you can get it online. Just type in the name of the hen and the weight, say around 2 kg and they will sell it to you. A 240g tub will last for years!

:D

Christian, it works out a lot more expensive but you can only get the 2.5% if you have a mixing license. The only Flubenvet that Joe Public can buy now is the 1% and I think that's only available in 60g packs. Please someone correct me if that's wrong.

Jam, tbh with those symptoms it could be worms but it could just as easily be something else.

You say they haven't started laying yet, which suggests they're less than a year old. I'm assuming they're your first chickens too.

How long have you had them and did you see how they were kept at their original home?

Are there any other symptoms, like sneezing, wheezing, discharge from eyes or nose, strange droppings etc?

If you can give us a bit more info, you might get appropriate advice, but to be perfectly honest with you, they don't sound that healthy to me and in your shoes I'd be booking a vets appointment.

You can buy Flubenvet 1% at SCATs if you have one close and need it urgently.

I still managed to buy some 2.5% on line a couple of weeks ago anyway.

I'd be a bit concerned about the unsteadiness though as I had a vaccinated chick that developed Marek's Disease as the vaccine is only 85% effective. The symptoms started with some unsteadiness which gradually got worse.

Maybe I'd get some veterinary advice or go to http://www.vethelpdirect.com as detailed on p7 in November's Country Smallholding magazine (poultry section). Apparently they have a dedicated section for backyardpoultry keepers and offer free veterinary advice 'to ensure timely clinical help when animals are ill or injured'

Good luck and I hope your chooks are ok

I'd certainly take them to the vets. They sound quite poorly.

Any wheeziness or rattling of their chests?

I had a look at that when I read it in CS but I have to say that if anything is worse than useless, it's vethelpdirect.com!

Whatever you put in, it will eventually tell you to contact your vet within any number of hours or days. So you might as well forget entering the symptoms and answering their questions and ...... phone the vet.

And those new peanuts are going down a treat thank you Smanners :D

They are less than a year old and my first chickens. :) Ive just ordered some flubenvet off the internet this afternoon.

I bought them in june this year and i think they were a couple of months old then. To be honest im not too sure exactly how old they are  bad i know. The place i bought them from was quite messy and some of their houses were just some bales of hay with wood on top :S But then again i cant really talk because my chicken house is a plastic wendy house which my little sister grew out of with wood nailed over the windows (inside a very secure big triangle coop of course) :D but inside the house its nice and big and they have a piece of three by two timber for them all to sit on.

No wheezing, sneezing or discharge as far as i can tell. The brahma has been producing quite a lot of foamy yellow droppings recently, more regularly than normal. After looking at a helpful website suggested by an someone on omlet, i think it is worms. But would worms also cause her to be unsteady on her feet?
