quickcluck
do you spray it on the back of the neck under the feathers? Is it just a one off or for a few days?? thanks
ClaireG
I sprayed it round the vent and under the wings for 3-4 days. Not sure if this is what everyone else does but it worked for me
Plum
I understand you spray around the vent area and under wings and legs then repeat in 4 days if you have seen lice etc., but could be wrong
Ain't Nobody Here
That's what I did, Plum .
chick wiggle
I sprayed mine under neck feathers, vent and under wings once and then again a week later. Did the trick well.
Falkor
I sprayed mine under neck feathers, vent and under wings once and then again a week later. Did the trick well. Snap......the respray after a week should deal with any eggs that were laid.
kevtheplumber
got told by the lady we got our new chicks off that all these are a waste of time as they are only a preventative, she said the only one worth buying is Diatom, pick them up by the legs and cover fully, its a mechanical killer apparently and completely kills off everything
Falkor
got told by the lady we got our new chicks off that all these are a waste of time as they are only a preventative, she said the only one worth buying is Diatom, pick them up by the legs and cover fully, its a mechanical killer apparently and completely kills off everything Sorry Kev but I think your lady is wrong on this one. The Johnson Spay contains Permethrin (sp?) which is an insecticide....it affects the nervous system of the creepy crawlies on contact and then they die. Permethrin is often the active ingredient in dog flea spot on's etc. It is toxic to cats however. Diatom also works by dehydrating the creepycrawlies as it scratches the surfaces of their bodies and they die. I use Diatom on my ladies, in the nestbox and their dustbath but if I found lice on any of my girl then I would use the Johnsons everytime as advised by my vet. Johnsons Anti Mite is not licenced for use of poultry in the UK.
chick wiggle
johnsons anti mite spray IS a preventative in the fact that it prevents the mites from living! It killed my girls lice stone dead!
sandyhas3chucks
but it WON'T prevent them from getting on them in the 1st place. therefore neither is a preventative. both contact killers!
quickcluck
well I managed to get all but 2 today so will see how they are looking in a week!
The Dogmother
Palmer07 is right, the spray will kill lice and mites on contact, but you need to respray a week later, making sure to get the spray right on the skin under the feathers.... it's easiest with two people and the hen held upside down. *please note that it is not licensed for use on poultry in the UK. It's always best to use a preventative too, which is where Diatom or Red Mite Powder woudlld come in....I shake a bit of either into the dustbath and nestbox. A friend buys Diatom in big sacks and has cat litter trays full of it in her chook pens. They love it and they are always lice free.
