Chicken with poorly eye - help please

Recommended Posts

I have 6 lovely rescue chickens and recently my mum (bless her!) got me 2 more (even though I told her I didn't want anymore as it would destroy the dynamics of the happy group).

I tried to introduce the two. But unfortunately it didn't go well and they were attacked. One in particular who was quite feisty. After 3 or 4 days we took them out and made them a separate run/coop.

Now one of the new chicken's (named Bruiser!) eye has completely closed - I think because of all the fighting - she was battered around the head poor thing. She was also sick this morning and looks very sorry for herself. I bathed the eye with salt water but don't know what else to do. Can anyone help - is there anymore i can do? I'm really worried about her. They are both very nervous at the moment so i don't want to stress her anymore than necessary. Thanks in anticipation.

Hello Ronnieroo and welcome to the forum. Sorry your first post is a cry for help!

I would take her to the vet if I'm honest, as a closed eye could mean an infection and the fact that she was sick isn't good. her don't have a gag reflex, so keep a close eye on her. Keep her somewhere warm and quiet and make sure she has access to food and water.

Good sticky on introducing new hens here - viewtopic.php?f=42&t=25886

Hope she is better soon.

Thanks to all of you for your advice. You all replied really quickly!

Well the good news is that bruiser seems to have made a remarkable recovery. I bathed her eye as you suggested and decided to take her to the vet on Monday but on Sunday she seemed so much better. And today she seems really hungry - it's as if she's finally settled with her friend Patsy and away from those rough bully boy chickens!!

So fingers crossed - all seems well again. Thanks again everyone - I definitely know where to go next time for some chook advice.xx
