Cinnamon
No, this is NOT a post about Celebrity Big Brother I discovered a great show on Discovery Real Time a few nights ago. It is called "The Great Escape" & is about a lovely man called Rob who has left his busy London life behind to live on a remote small holding in Wales. He has a goat, horse & 3 mad hens who regularly escape It is all a bit hit & miss with him trying to live a rural life & eat from the wild, but with things not always going to plan. He is quite young & pretty fit, with a lovely well spoken voice & great rakish sideburns And on next Tuesday on BBC3 there is an odd sounding new show called "The Roadkill Chef" about a guy who only eats roadkill & has done so for several years. He is actually a veggie, but will eat meat that has been killed by accident. Sounds interesting,if a bit icky!

Sounds interesting,if a bit icky! I've seen this guy before. He's....well...let me put it like this....you wouldn't ask him to babysit! Apparrantly it's illegal to eat roadkill...although how anyone would police it I don't know. You are very likely to get worms or a massive, potentially fatal vitamin A overdose if you eat the liver of anything canine. Not to mention the other yukky things you might get if you eat something that has been already nibbled by a crow,a fox and a rat or too. He goes out at the crack of dawn to pick up "fresh roadkill. Absolutely barking...... I've never understood how anyone can say they're vegetarian and then list the meats they eat....roadkill or otherwise. If you eat meat of any sort, then you are not a vegetarian.
Cinnamon
He does sound like a bit of a nutter. I am going to give it a go though - could be entertaining There is a feature about him in the new Radio Times,by the way.
Popcorn
Oh, yes, I've heard about this guy too. What a bizarre thing to do. I'm not sure how I feel about it really, it's a new one on me. Definately give it a go though and see if I can keep my stomach contents intact - watching, not eating the roadkill I'll see if I can tune into the Great Escape too sometime. Sounds like my cup of tea.
Lesley
In Minnesota I came across a book called "Kill it 'N' Grill it" - quite a popular pastime over there I think The Great Escape sounds good.
Mrs Frugal
I caught The Great Escape first time round and it's good. I enjoyed it anyway !
Chicken Licken
if you run it over then you cannot take it to eat. The car behind you can stop and pick it up though. Had some lovely vension sausages via this route and a friend tho... muntjack deer which the farmers consider as vermin anyway!

Charlottechicken
I will try and remember the road kill programme, I can't receive the other channel though. I used to work with a woman who had a sister in Scotland, who lived on the shores of Loch Ness. She once turned up home with a deer in the back of the van, a result of traffic collision, which she hoisted onto the large kitchen table and avidly dissected to put in the freezer much to the horror of her visiting townie sister! bronze
I watched the one in Wales when it was on the first time. I specifically remember it as one of the ladies who owns the house is called Bronwen and a chicken was named after her. I enjoyed watching it especially as he was more like me than some of the others doing similar things, had the will just not so much knowledge. Egluntyne
Googled "Roadkill Recipes" and came up with so many sites It must be a much more widespread hobby than I thought.....especially over the pond. Here are a couple of articles to whet your appetites! http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2-2017102,00.html http://www.outsideinsides.com/recipes.asp
Charlottechicken
Just a reminder! The Roadkill Chef is on BBC3 tomorrow night at 9pm. If anyone is interested in foraging, there is a series about it in the Country Kitchen magazine called 'foraging around the M25' by someone called Steve Coffey.
