debbier
This thought is annoying me, so I thought I'd canvas opinion from the wise. So, chickens peck red bits, yes? Hence the gentian violet spray to mask sore areas, and having to be Very Careful when wearing red nail varnish. So, why don't they peck the combs??? They are as red as anything! Just wondering out loud, really.
Chucky1
Yes, makes me larf (hysterically) when OH paints her toenails and goes out in sandals. Oh the thought of sandal wearing weather Our gals peck the combs, thankfully not too viciously.

Just wondering out loud, really. It's a very good question.............they do peck combs if there has been some sort of injury and blood is present, in fact once blood is present they will peck to death given the right circumstances. As for pecking red bits when it's bum area........when an area like that has had it's feathers removed, the skin goes red on exposure to the sun and elements, new feathers growing through can then get pecked out, they seem to go for the feathers more unless as above, there's blood. I know I near enough stand alone on this.........but I do eat my birds, any males hatched eventually go in the pot and any old birds if they need to be culled are the same (unless ill of course). I often pluck them near my chickens and they go mad for the feathers, especially any young ones, maybe it's a mineral thing. Any good as an answer?
