JB09
Hi all, One of my girls has had a poorly eye and in on drops and now antibiotics. I have been given Baytril and a syringe! It says to give 0.8ml but this looks a lot! Has anyhone else administered Baytril and can they remember their dosage? The only reason I ask is that i'm not sure my vets deals with chickens alot and have often wondered if they know what they are talking about!! Thanks JB
Guest
0.8ml? an eigth of a ml? that's hardly anything, sounds right to me. You're not trying to load up 8ml are you? did the vet weigh your chook? If so, they will have dosed her according to her weight. If you're worried, ring the vet. We always get bayrril in tablet form and hide it in a raisin, much easier IMO.
Guest
p.s. I'm sure your vet will have dealt with budgies and parrots etc, chickens are just a bigger version
sjp
I had to give it to my late speckaldy and the vet had to weigh her to work the dose out so yours should be right it only looks a lot because it's in a small syringe
JB09
Yes she was weighed. SJP I think your right, its because its a small syringe! What a doughnut! Was actually quite easy to do, felt a bit mean though. It must have been quite a sight me brandishing a syringe whilst having a chicken in a head lock! Guest
well done, i can't do the syringe thing! Last time I tried the plunger stuck so I pushed a bit harder and the whole lot squirted everywhere. i always ask for pills now!
sjp
I mixed it with a bit of chick crumb takes longer but less stress
Egluntyne
One of my girls was on a 1/2ml dose recently.
skye
Ours is on 0.2ml per day - I reckon Baytril must come in different concentrations? The vet told me it was 0.1ml per 1kg. I just injected grapes and fed her them! skye x
Jools
Yes it does come in different concentrations. When one of my newbies came down with Myco a couple of years ago, my vet was about to prescribe the weaker strength, then suggested a smaller amount of the stronger stuff would be easier to administer. It was.
JB09
Obviously there is a withdrawal from egg consumption, can I feed these eggs to the girls? I'm thinking a bit of extra protein and I hate the though of them going to waste... However come to think of it, is it weird them eating their own eggs? so many questions!! Jools
It's the best use for them tbh, just make sure they don't look like eggs though, or you'll have an egg eating problem on your hands before you know it!
Egluntyne
Trouble is the drug is transferred to the eggs and so by feeding them back to the hens, they are having more, unmeasured amounts so it is best not to feed them back to the hens.
