OK, as a middle ground, how about this? If you've researched on the wibbly wobbly web, then presumably you've found the Wikipedia article. You said nothing you found explained the differences in terms you could understand, so perhaps you could narrow that down and let us know exactly which bits you don't understand.

I'm sure we provide enough nudges in the right direction to get you to a point of understanding whilst still allowing you to truthfully say the answer you hand in is your own work.

Have you specifically read the Wikipedia article on Trikaya? There are some interesting concepts to have to get your head round in it, but it's a fairly good summary.

And also take a look at the main article on Buddhism and have a look at the section about Buddhas. That small synopsis is pretty useful at spotting the fundamental difference between the branches of Buddhism.

Now, your mission, should you choose to accept it - which you will - is to have a read of those two articles and report back

OK, no problem. However, you're likely to be doing your homework twice this way

The particular extract I was looking at is

Theravada

In Theravada doctrine, a person may awaken from the "sleep of ignorance" by directly realizing the true nature of reality; such people are called arahants and occasionally buddhas. After numerous lifetimes of spiritual striving, they have reached the end of the cycle of rebirth, no longer reincarnating as human, animal, ghost, or other being.

(......)

Mahayana

In the Mahayana, the Buddha tends not to be viewed as merely human, but as the earthly projection of a beginningless and endless, omnipresent being (see Dharmakaya) beyond the range and reach of thought. Moreover, in certain Mahayana sutras, the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha are viewed essentially as One: all three are seen as the eternal Buddha himself.

Celestial Buddhas are individuals who no longer exist on the material plane of existence, but who still aid in the enlightenment of all beings.

Now, let's have a game of spot the difference. How many differences can you see between the two summaries, and which, if any, do you see as differences worth mentioning?

To Monica and Ellies mum - found a website aimed at kids on buddhism - am i allowed to give the link or will that be cheating???

 No that would be fine.Thank you, this is quite a tricky homework and she has tried very hard to get the information herself but I agree the wording for a 13 year old is quite involved.

Thanks everyone for your help. Monica+Ellie managed to get the homework finished eventually  Part of the problem was that while she understood she had to present the whole thing so that it could be understood by the less able in her class which was a tricky one as it was quite a complicated subject. Anyway with your help (and a bit from me) she managed to get there eventually so thanks :)

Well done, Monica+Ellie.

I've no idea if you'll be able to fully appreciate it now, but the most important aspect of what you're going through at the moment is that you're learning how to learn, and that's a hugely important skill. I'm constantly amazed at how many people of all ages will hit an obstacle, think, "I don't understand" and give up at that point, so kudos for keeping at it and more for finishing it successfully.
