The Dogmother
They are lovely names Lesley, better than Jake's suggestion for the chook In Italian Ciara, means 'clear, light or bright'
chocchick
One of the islands in Orkney is called "lamb holm" or there's barra or the Isle of Ewe ! I thought Scottish islands would make great names for our chickens but the boys objected. Stroma, Iona, Staffa, Skye, Rona, Cramond, Harris, Raasay, Rum, Tiree, Seil, Shuna, Fidra, Islay, Jura, Gigha, Arran, Ailsa (Craig) I also suggested lochs, mountains and malt whisky names but they didn't think much of that either - they are fickle. Morag There's one called rum... OH drinks black sheep ale Good luck with DEFRA.

Sorry - I meant to say thank you to Morag as well - plenty of names there for me to keep ready for any lambs .....and Sarah's Ice Cream Sundaes as well The sheep with the yellow bottom is Skye - so 147 days is it Louise? Lesley
Yes, yesterday, Carl was yelling through the walkie talkie that we had a sheep with a yellow bottom We often pick up others on the w/t so goodness knows what they make of our conversations

Lesley
Heeeeeeeeeeeelllllpppp!!!!!!!! We've tied down everything we can and we're still in trouble! Power keeps going - sirens sounding all the time along the Fosse Way - animals spooked! The chicken ark has just gone even though we had turned it round. This time the floor and all the innards went flying as well. We've set it up against the netting and left it on the floor for the time being. The Eglus stay in place - good design We've had to rescue feeders as the lids are caught by the wind and disappear. They are all set against the netting so there isn't very far for them to go. The trampoline is trying to take off. Son has weighted it down with concrete blocks The first thing Lauren and Jake will ask when they come in from school will be "can we go on the trampoline?" and Jake will probably lie on the floor sobbing when I say No! myles
Lesley be warned we lost our tramp a coulpe of years ago. It was ruined all crushed in a tree. We thought we'd strapped it down really well but obviously not enough. My tip turn it upside down then it can't take off. Ours flew along way. it was really dangerous the trees are the only thing that stopped it going on to a road. I really would turn it upside down. Lesley
aaaarrrrggghh! we can't - it's got the safety netting still on it. The weather was so nice the other day that Lauren and Jake were on it wearing T shirts It seems OK at the moment with all the blocks keeping it down - I'll keep an eye on it. The next thing it will meet if it blows away will be the chicken runs
myles
Thinking about it, it's too windy, it would too dangerous to turn it. Fingers crossed it rides it out. Anne
The Dogmother
A slate has just come off the office roof It came crashing down - thank goodness no-one was underneath at the time
Martin B
The weather is horrible! I walked to school this moring throug inches of rain and muck, I've been soaked all day and really uncomfortable.
Lesley
It has calmed down quite a bit now. We have a couple of trees down, nowhere near the house fortunately. We've lost power many times - I'm not resetting the clocks again Apparently, the gusts of wind in this area were 102mph
Guest
You seem to be getting the worst of the weather Lesley - rain, fog and wind! Nicola's description sounded just like my chickens - all huddled in the corner. Their plastic roof blows up and down and the noise is terribly loud in their run. They must be frightened. I let them out this afternoon and they spent most of the afternoon huddled in my house. Kim has hurt her foot again and just sat underneath the computer! The other two came and went, but were very nervous. I suppose I'd better clear up the seeds they didn't want, which they felt just had to be scratched out of the bowl! They're good girls though, almost nothing else to clear up at all!

Lesley
It is a glorious day here - lovely sunshine meant we could get the Eglus and water/feed containers all tidied up before the DEFRA Vet comes tomorrow We've also sorted out our bio-security measures - a big vat of Jeyes fluid for the vet to dunk his wellies in (well, a big cat litter tray snatched from the chickens who were using it as a dust bath with sand in ) We also know what we will be able to do if isolation is required due to Bird Flu precautions. The vet is only coming to go through paperwork with us so that we know which forms we should be filling in -at least that's what he said - you never know
Guest
Another 'first' for you then Lesley! Good luck. I hope he/she doesn't bring any nasty surprises.

Lesley
Too late - I've already told him they have names, and the sheep, and the cows He was OK about it all - he keeps animals in small numbers as well He was really nice and friendly - and he has a friend who has an Eglu! Quite handy because he didn't roll his eyes at ours He really only did come to go through all the paperwork requirements with us and ask if we had any questions. As all the paperwork was tidy and well kept, we didn't have any problems. ......... I didn't have to bribe him with home-made shortbread He's written February down for a visit from our own Vet - but neither of us can remember what it is for? Louise - what will the cats do with the diluted Jeyes fluid footbath? and what will happen to them? Clare - Jake named his last choice of hens, Ploppy and Burger He was OK about Lottie 2 - as long as we kept him - and he liked the name Doodle, he calls him Doodle-Doo
