alisonclair
Hi there I am fairly new to chicken keeping. I adopted my ex bats about three months ago. They live in a coop on my allotment across the road from my house. I have been amazed at their progress, and they seem pretty happy. They are beginning to look quite beautiful now, probably to impress Rupert the Cockerel who arrived on Sunday! While four of them now have more or less full featherage, one of them seems to be struggling with the ones on her back. Her neck feathers are looking great (she had none when I got her) but the ones on her back are still not good. I have seen no evidence of feather pecking by her or the other hens. She is acting perfectly normally and eating well. I picked her up this evening for a closer examination and couldn't see anything, although she looked a little dusty and so am wondering if maybe she has some sort of mite? It was getting dark so couldn't get in real close. Not sure if the link below will work, but if it does, this is a photo of Nora Batty so you can see what I mean. http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?ref=profile&id=577358390#/photo.php?pid=3035837&id=577358390 Has anyone got any advice? I dust their house with red mite powder by the way. Thanks Alison

The Dogmother
Welcome to the forum Some ex batts don't regain all their feathers as the constant laying in the sheds has depleted all their protein supplies, but if they are lice and mite free, then I'd recommend a diet with extar protein to help them refeather. There are a couple of topics on here at the moment an the saem subject, so you will find some helpful discussions and advice there.
Chicken Shirl
Awwww they look lovely. Try giving them extra proteine as Claret say's. Mealworms, hard boiled eggs Tuna fish. Hope little Nora Batty gets all her feathers back soon.
