Help! Is my chicken ill?

Recommended Posts

Having a panic!

Let the chickens out as normal this morning and have just got back home again - Doris is sitting on the ground rather than doing her usual wandering and pecking.

I opened the run door and she got up and walked away but then sat down again straight away. She's sitting ever so slightly on one side.

What does this mean? Is this normal? We're only in week 3, so not sure if this is normal chicken behaviour...

Help!

Is it sunny there (albeit a bit cold!) hens do lie down and flop to one side when they are basking in a bit of sun which would be most welcome after all the cloudy weather

Otherwise it could be that she is uncomfortable in the abdomen, has she laid today at all? are there any other symptoms? is she eating and drinking?

Mine aren't very active today because of the intense cold. But they are perching rather than sitting on the cold ground so she may not be well. If you can, I'd bring her in and observe for a while. I have a large cardboard box with an open top I keep specially for the purpose but any large container would do.

The ground was a bit sunny, now you come to mention it. And since the sun has moved she's got up and is now walking around...

She hasn't laid today, but I've watched her eating and drinking, and there's no other visual sign of something being wrong. I'll keep an eye on her anyway just in case.

Maybe I was worrying unnecessarily...it's because I've never seen her do that before (still learning). I lost my beloved cat to illness just before xmas, so I'm a bit sensitive about these things at the moment....

Will try and calm down...make a cup of tea...

:silenced:

Thanks for the advice!

Dont worry, its tricky when the chickens are new as you dont really know what is normal and what isnt, its not like a dog where most people have a rough knowledge of how they behave

Just keep an eye on her and let us know if there are any more problems, if she starts to look ill bring her in and put her in a box to warm up as suggested

Sorry to hear about your cat, I am taking mine later to be put to sleep, its not at all easy is it ((hugs)) x
