GilesC
Hi We are having some trouble with one of our chickens called Babs ( Miss Pepperpot ) for about 4 months now. She has been bald on her legs previously though some of this has grown back. But now in the last month it has spread to her breast. She seems quite happy in herself and she is eating and laying well. She is about 2 now so we thought she might be moulting but it would not this long normally. There is no evidence that the other hens are pecking at her. Her vent is clean and healthy as well. We also thought it might be mites or lice however our two other chickens ( both Sussex's ) haven't had any of these problems and we wash the eglu once a week thoroughly. Here is a picture showing the problem: http://i602.photobucket.com/albums/tt101/GilesCowling/DSC00010.jpg Edited January 4, 2010 by Guest
Redwing
Youre right it doesnt seem to be pecking problems I would treat for mites just in case This sort of baldness is reasonably common in birds that nestle rather than perch, does she sleep in the nestbox or perhaps you fill the tray of the Eglu quite a bit with bedding so air doesnt circluate as freely under the bars? A bit of extra protein may help, rinsed tuna or some chick crumb will give her a protein boost helping those feathers to regrow
Plum
Could it be a sensitivity to the bedding. On second thoughts the skin would be inflamed. Redwing has probably got it right.
GilesC
Thanks Redwing, you advice really helped and she is already starting to grow more new feathers. The protein must of helped her a lot !!
