Hot water bottles

Recommended Posts

If I were to put a hot water bottle in the cube would I put it in the tray under the roosting bars? Would I need to wrap it in a tea towel or something? Would it be safe to fill it with boiling water or would I have to tone it down?

Its started snowing here again and am not impressed with the temp even if my ladies have been out all day and not shown any fuss about it!

They enjoyed their warm ready brek break just before lights out so at least they will have warm tummies.

With hot water bottles, if the chickens snuggle up to them, once the initial heat's dissipated, wouldn't the water bottle actually make the chickens colder?

Or would they just move away then (sorry - not sure just how stupid chickens are, haven't got mine yet!)?

the hot water bottle is in as is a wheat hottie (couldn't find my other hot water bottle!) When I opened the dropping tray they weren't frozen so that makes me a bit happier...if you know what I mean!. I don't make it a habit to examine poo......YET! :?

Just hope the smell of the hot wheat doesn't make my chooks feel like a midnight snack

Mine have a hottie that came in a nice furry cover and it was propped up on its side against the side wall, just so it could warm the air. If you don't have a cover, I would wrap in old towel or similar.

For the last three nights, I am not ashamed to admit they have been brought inside in a cardboard box - I currently only have two chooks and until the new ones arrive and whilst the temp is down close to minus ten, I did not feel that they could generate enoug body heat between them to keep warm. They do have their hottie during the day, filled first thing and then again around midday, to keep the Eglu as warm as poss, given they spend a lot of time in their at the mo.

I would put the hottie in the main Eglu rather than the tray to avoid having to clean it off. ALso, wiorth noting that it is so cold here that the poo tray has frozen solid (the metal clasp is frozen stuck) so that I cannot remove it - if the hottie were in there, I wouldn't be able to get it out.....

I made a hot water bottle out of a 5 litre water bottle filled with very hot ( but not boiling water), wrapped it in an old sheet, then wrapped hessian round the lot and tied it all up with string. I put it in the cube against the wall about 5pm yesterday and the water was still warm at 8am when I got them up. One of them spent the night on top of it !
