Debb11
Hi all First real problem, found out this morning that "She" (Buttercup) is now a "He" I'm not happy at all. When i bought my 2 chickens who are Goldtops ( cross between Silkie and Light Sussex Bantam)One is Gold (Buttercup)and the other a nice speckled one hence the name Popcorn,i was told by the breeder that they were sex linked so the girls are gold and the boys are white, well this one slipped through the net unless girls do cock a doodle do even though no other males are around, I've emailed the breeder to find out what to do, but the breeder lives about 1hrs drive away and even if i was offered a swap, i still have my 3 ex-batt waiting to introduced at the mo as i only got them last Sunday so can't do that at the moment and it's not fair to just introduce just 1 into a group. Next thing, though not a problem is what extra protein can i give my ex-batt including the ex-batt crumb which they eat as if its the last ever meal they will ever get. lol I've heard that giving them tuna or cat food is good Debb
Patricia W
Some girls do try to crow - one of mine did! I took 4 of mine back to the breeder ( 4 hours return) but she convinced me that 3 out of the 4 were girls and she is right. So do contact the breeder. As for extra protein, tuna, cat food ( not chicken or turkey) are good. Mine aren't ex-bats but I use the Allen and Paige Ex-Bat layers pellets. Others will have advice too
Chook n Boo Mum
After a week or two they will realise that there is food available all the time & will slow down on the "last meal" impressions My rabble liked tinned pilchards and tinned tuna......make sure they are well rinsed if they are in brine.....mine have tuna in oil, so I just drain it. Scrambled egg is another favourite if you can bear to share the eggs It's a shame if Buttercup is a boy...I've had 3 girls which were boys in disguise, so I'm no good to advise, sorry Good luck with the intros when they happen, Sha x
tom123
If your 2 Goldtops look the same and both look like this... Then they are both hens and one is trying to be the dominant cockerel, as they are sex-linked (as you said) and it doesn't generally go wrong! Good luck Tom

tom123
There you go Yep, that's a boy, you should take him back and swap him! As you can see the colouring is different and any breeder who breeds these knows that boys turn out like this!

Debb11
A big thanks you to all those who managed to get my picture up. I've read now that hens can crow and take on a dominant hen role and i would of waited until she layed if she did, they are both about 20 wks+ now so could be do to lay? but as tom said it's a boy. A trip back to the breeder then for a swap or sell him somehow and no we couldn't eat him lol Thanks again, your all brill Debb
sandyhas3chucks
mealworms are good extra source of protein I get mine from Anne Kennedy Bird Supplies. Don't over do if you have just got them as their tums will take a while to adjust to dif foods.
