twinkle1001
Hello all! I posted a little while ago looking for suggestions on keeping chicken noise to a minimum in the morning before they are 'released' from their eglu. I am now in a routine of letting them about 7.30 in the morning then either heading off to work or back to bed on a weekend. Now, all that is fine and dandy on these dark mornings but what to do when the skies get lighter earlier?? Any suggestions greatfully received! Many thanks Abbi Florrie Winnie Madge Attilla the Hen
Toots
Ahhh tha old problem! my soloution has been.... get up earlier! Because i have a WIR when it is warm enough i leave the door open at night but they still make a fuss when they: expect food, treats, generally letting me know i have done something, or not done something or just for the fun of seing me run around! if anyone has a suggestion for twinkle i will also be greatful! twinkle1001
I did have them out last summer but the 2 non-ex-batts I had (now rehomed) woke the neighbourhood screaming at 5.15 in the morning - it didnt go down well! And I really dont fancy getting up at 5am to let them out! lol x
Patricia W
The trick to getting them to sleep in when its lighter is to cover the cube or eglu with a blackout cover. I find it works with my cockerel so it should help with the hens. You need to cover the run as well. I think someone has made a special cover, but anything dark will do. chelsea
We have used plastic backed picnic blankets over the cube (not covering the ventilation holes) for a few summer seasons now and it's worked a treat. Some eglu/cube colours let in light more than others - our purple cube is quite dark inside, however our lovely orange eglu is quite bright inside all year. sandyhas3chucks
yes I have had 2 made. There is plenty of room on the overhang to allow the air to get through This was unfinished, you can have rear gap covered or not on the finished one just by sliding it
Porkypie
Hello Sandyhas3chooks. Did you make your lovely cover from blackout curtains and if so do they have a waterproof coating? My taurpaulin effort is OK but I rather like the look of what you've done I am dreading the earlier rise of the sun

twinkle1001
I am LOVING the idea of a cover - what are yours made from please Sandyhas3chooks? I have 3 eglus, one blue, one green, that I have within an aviary so would just need to cover the houses rather than the whole run?
