Jewels
Hi, I hope someone can answer my question, my gingernut ranger has decided to moult now in the coldest time. I also have a Mrs pepperpot who is not moulting. I am only getting one egg a day, I can't tell who is laying it. Do they lay whilst moulting or not? Please help. Thanks. coco
one of my ex batts Lily is moulting and has stopped for a couple of weeks now. I don't think they can lay and moult at the same time. Lily has been really miserable while moulting and is just starting to cheer up a bit now.
Lewis
Nope, they don't generally lay whilst moutling Ours are old and moulting so haven't had eggs for ages, and the others are too young!
quickcluck
Hi Jewels... They do tend to stop laying whilst moulting as they put all their energies into growing new feathers. Sometimes it's good to give them some extra protein to help with the growth meal worms or sardines are good
Raina
Sorry to Hijack the thread but what age do hens start to moult? (They are both over a yr old now and haven't started)

sparkysmum
No, they don't lay when moulting. If you look their combs shrink back. They only start to lay again when their combs go red and their usual size again. Ax
quickcluck
The one's in tom sauce are fine, not oil..... mine love them along with tuna or pilchards. Some I know also give organic cat food, but haven't done that myself...
Christian
Sorry to Hijack the thread but what age do hens start to moult? (They are both over a yr old now and haven't started) Depends on the hen Raina. They moult a couple of times in the first year, but usually very lightly, you can barely notice. They usually moult at a year old, but again it could be a mini moult. Mine are a couple of years old now and at one point were looking really thread bare My Maran is the last to moult this year and her tail feathers are just starting to grow back. I agree, I have a Speckledy that is about 16 months old, and she has had a big moult. I have a Barnebar that had a noticable mini moult at 8 months (just after a broody episode) and now I have a Silkie that is 9 months old and is having a moult (again after being broody). My other hens are between 9 months old and 2 years old and no signs of moulting, although 3 are ex batts that came to me rather threadbare
Dappy Chick
I gave mine some Pigeon Moulting food when they were in moult - I am convinced it helped them.
