abbewesty
Hi 2 days ago I found one of my hens hiding in the corner of the garden......I also noticed drops of bright red blood on the floor. She was puffed out and kept closing her eyes. I examined her and her vent was bleeding.....it was dripping from her. It didn't look prolapsed just swollen. I cleaned her up with warn water, popped her in a box in the kitchen next to the radiator where she stayed all night. After another day she was back to her normal self and her vent looked ok. The same thing has happened again today. I have had a look......again no prolapse, but it looks like perhaps a tear? I have isolated her and she was eating and drinking....now she is puffed out again with sleepy eyes.....the bleeding seems to have stopped though. Is there anything I can do for her? I have purple spray but I'm not sure if it should be used on the vent? Thanks very much Abbe
Plum
I have used it on the vent before. Do you think she is having trouble laying and another has pecked her while she is straining That is what has happened with mine before.
Egluntyne
If she is fairly new to laying she could be tearing herself internally if she is passing large eggs. A calcium supplement will strengthen the contractions, making the eggs pass more quickly along the system and end up being a little smaller. abbewesty
It does now look as if she is straining to pass an egg.......she is also passing what looks like egg white and egg yolk as well as blood. The blood is mainly congealed now. She has perked up a bit otherwise..... Thanks for your advice x
Egluntyne
I think she might need to see a vet to be honest. Could be an infection at the root of the problem.
Plum
Agree with Egluntyne and in the mean time if she is passing a broken egg I would try and get all the broken egg out of her which means clean hands or glove and removing it.
xScrunchee
Aaah, I hope that she is better soon.
madchick
Just noticed today that one of my chicks Emerald was bleeding from the vent. found blood spots in the eglo as if it occured as she was getting off the nest. We had one egg today but dont know which of the three laid it. Anyway I checked her out and I found what appeared to be dark clots coming out of the vent and bright red blood over her down and bottom feathers. I've taken her in and bathed her bottom in warm water and sprayed the vent with purple spray. The bleeding seems to have slowed up now and she has gone back in the eglo as I initally separated her to the other half of our garden from her pals but all she did was go and hide behind a bush. She still seems reasonably keen to eat (she's a pig normally) but i'm not sure if I should leave her with the others overnight as I am concerned they will try and peck at her vent. I would take her to the vets but its sunday and £100 call out, same tomorrow as bank holiday. She went to the vets a few weeks ago as she was iffy and went onto antiobiotics. One of the others was a bit off yesterday with a scatty bum. I just put wormer Flubenvet in their food yesterday this wouldnt cause any of these problems would it? The vet isnt much help he tells me they treat chickens by treating the flock once one has died and a PM done to find what they died of. Not very helpful when you only have 3 birds really. Plum
Sounds like damage inside she might have torn laying or been pecked when laying. I would keep cleaning her and seperate her from the others. If she tries to lay again or strain they will peck any redness or blood they see. If you keep her in the gloom and keep her off layers pellets it will slow things down and give her a chance to heal before laying again though one is probably already on the way. I gave mine weetabix and mixed corn +grit which seemed to work and put covers over her little run to keep it dark. Never heard of any side effects of Flubenvet. As you've started flubenvet I would carry on with whatever food you give her. The vet may not have a clue with single chickens but a tear is the same with any animal so would be able to put a stitch in and give antibiotics if needed. madchick
Hi there Thanks for your reply and advise. I 've separated her and she's in a cat box in our conservatory. Still happily eating and had a little spinach tonight. Vent is still bleeding a little but I caught one of the others pecking at her earlier before separating her. Have to say her vent appears a little ragged at the top as if she may have torn but I'm not too hot on chicken anatomy so I will continue to bathe it and monitor and take her to the vets if it doesnt settle. I have a little Baytril left from her previous visit to the vet so will get that down her and I have given her homeopathic treatment Arnica and Sulphur in her water to see if that helps. I think she seems ok as she ran over to me for food and brought herself into the house and straight into the cat basket to roost. Will keep her away from the others until all is well. Plum
May just be pecked then. She sounds a strong girl so hope she's ok.
madchick
Hi there again Emerald started to go down hill yesterday and started yellow diahorrea along with another one of the girls that already had a runny bum for 2 weeks. Anyhow made a call to the vet who advised to administer Baytril and carry on worming as before and bring her in today for a check. My regular vet thinks the blood was probably a ruptured blood vessel from straining and thinks she either has worms or a bacterial infection or both. He has given me Pancur to worm her with and that went down a treat on tuna fish. Amazing as she wouldn't eat anything all day but couldnt get enough of the fish. Has to have 10 days Baytril too but seems the usual ride to the vets is the ultimate cure (threat of the big needle works with my cats) instantly better and same with her. She was wandering the garden quietly moaning to herself which is better than this morning as she was silent, hunched up with her eyes shut. Lets hope she continues to improve. If the antibiotics dont improve things in 48 hours the vet wants a poo sample from the poo bumed but otherwise normal Pearl and send that for testing. Apparently as Emerald has been on antibiotics they wont get an accurate result. Mad-but somewhat relieved-Chick
Nicole Wharton
Hi, I've kept hens for 30 years. I know nobody likes to say this but bleeding from the bottom in a hen can be caused by rats. No one likes to admit it but this can be the original cause of the injury and THEN other hens may peck at the bloody area
Laurab123
Hi, I have a white chicken who is bleeding from her back end. She’s perky and is eating and drinking, she’s in with 8 other hens who keep pecking her back end. I have also noticed a what looks like a rat run in their hen hen run today. Can you please advise what’s best to do for her ?
mullethunter
You need to keep her apart from the others because they won’t stop pecking her. At least until you can get rid of all the blood. If you get some purple spray to disguise the colour that may work but observe them very closely in case it doesn’t. Could a rat get in to where they sleep? PAM TINNEY
HI Everyone, I am fairly new to having backyard chickens and I now have five of my 27 hens bleeding from their back end. I have separated them from the remaining hens as they are starting to peck at them and scaring them by pecking their bottoms. What might they have? I am noticing rat/mouse holes in their run, not necessarily in their sleeping quarters, but their day run. How do I determine what they have or what is going on. mullethunter
Separating them was definitely the right thing to do. The only way to find out though is to put some time into watching them…
Lewis
5 chickens with blood from their back ends sounds very worrying, could it be something like Coccidiosis?
