The four-grape dilemma

Recommended Posts

So, I was putting together their afternoon mash plus treats bowl this afternoon. If I put grapes on there, I usually put one each, so there are no squabbles.

But today I had only four grapes left. The dilemma was do I eat the fourth grape myself, or do I put four grapes into the bowl for three chickens and see what happens?

In the end, I put four grapes out, and had endless fun watching them do the "grape dance" - each chicken grabs a grape, then realises there is one left, so drops the one that they have, and the others then do a grape-swap until one chicken finally eats a grape. There is then a free-for-all for the remaining grape involving a lot of chasing, going round in circles, grumbling and general squabbling until all the grapes have gone.

Grapes, docsquid are the sole property of our feathered friend, so glad you gave them all 4

Well, of course they are! How silly of me to even think of eating one!

I suspect chopping them up won't make much difference because no matter how many grapes there are, the grape that the other chicken has is always better than yours, so there is always a fair amount of squabbling. Bless them!

The thing is, mine each grab a grape quickly, but then before swallowing it they think "Ah, the one the other chicken has got looks better than mine" so they try and grab the grape that the other chicken has got while still preserving their own in their beak. They can't quite swallow it whole so they have to sort of try and peck their own a bit, while chasing another chicken to gry and grab theirs, without dropping their own.

This makes for entertainment of the highest order as grapes are dropped, grabbed and chickens pursued in ever decreasing circles around the garden!

I chop them up - so they think they're getting double but also because I was worried they might choke as they gulp them down so quick and I would have no clue what to do if that happened!!!! Can you heimlich a chicken? Can they choke???

I also tried an interesting test the other day to see if my chickens were colour blind and put a mixture of green and red grapes in their porridge for breakfast. OK and I had a bet and I won 8)

yes, all the red ones disappeared in a flash before a few curious sounding noises - what are these strange green things. My lot don't 'do' green, well, except grass, but broccolli, spinach, peas, sprouts - no thank you.... we will pass.

We buy grapes every week and similarly wouldn't dare eating them ourselves. When my Father in Law pops over and says "Ah Grapes" - we don't dare say they're for the chickens - he would think giving chickens grapes a tad indulgent.

Our latest wheeze is to give a small bunch of grapes (2 or 3 each) still on the vine and have a game of chicken, duck grape rugby :lol::lol:

I am thinking of seeing if Sky are interested in the rights
