Help with planning WIR please

Recommended Posts

I want to get a new WIR [ aviaries4U ] - 12ft*6ft

And I know that I want to get an egg port door so I can get the eggs without opening the door to the WIR [ I will have the eglu on a table]

I recently saw this food hatch which I think is pure genius from Jackthelad

Can anyone else suggest features that might be worthwhile getting ?

Is a pophole worth getting .. and does anyone have pictures of one ?

My stable door is the best feature of my WIR (in my humble opinion  ). I can get to the eggs easily and the girls can't nip out while I'm otherwise engaged  . My eglu is very easy to swivel because it sits on a square of old lino. (You'll see what I mean in my signature link.)

The only thing I might have done differently is make the top and bottom door difference sizes so I could empty the poo tray with the bottom door shut. At present, I have to open both doors to get to the tray.

I've got a WIR fom Avaries4u 12x9ft. I also found a stable type door very useful, also an eggport door, a poo tray hatch, and also a small free range door for the hens to get in and out of. Only problem, we've had is the leaky roof, but otherwise they are well made.

Good luck with your plans.

Another vote for a stable door - useful if you get locked in (yes I did  the old sold wooden door was sawn in half that same afternoon!)

I wish I'd fitted guttering before it was put in place (too heavy and too close to the walls to retro-fit). Did you see the "benefits of hindsight" thread? Learn from our mistakes!

I have just had a look at the hindsight thread .. very helpful and funny .!

Thank you all for your help !

I think the only thing I have left out is the guttering .... Although it may be a mistake to retrofit this .. I just cant justify the added expense

I know I will be looking at translucent tarps as well at some point

On the good news side .. I HAVE ORDERED THE RUN !!!!!!!!

Its coming with a translucent sloping roof, inward opening door , table and ladder, egg port, a free range port, a stable door to access eglu for cleaning AND a food hatch.

And this little beauty will all be plonked onto a brand new concrete slab !

Are we famous with a food hatch!!

The food hatch has been a great success no loose chickens in the morning before work and really easy to access.

I've got to say the chickens are a little confused quite funny to watch when I go out of the back door to see them they can't decide whether to hang around the food hatch which is closest to the back door or run to the other end of the run which is were the door is that I let them out of to roam the garden!

Manic chickens running up and down very funny to watch.......

The hatches and ports are around 10-15 on top of his basic price list.

Tony has prices on his website avaries4u. He also has special offers sometimes.

He is really friendly and helpful ... I would drop him en email

The slab cost me just over 250 .. worth every penny not to have to do it myself
