speckled hen
Hello everyone All is happy with our lovely girls, they are laying again and generally look great. But....Cookie our Amber star has started going on walkabout. We have always let them roam and this has not been a problem, our neighbour has just told us that she wondered across the road and into his garage yesterday, she came home on her own but obviously this cant keep happening. So why did the chicken cross the road????????? Could it be the cockerel that very proudly stands on the wall crowing at our girls?? He is on the other side of the road, do chickens get attracted like this? Our cockerel died a little while ago and we haven't replaced him so can't help but wonder if a boy would stop the walkabouts??? Any suggestions please I don't want to keep her locked up and I definitely don't want a squashed girl. Many Thanks xx
mostin
I must admit that my boy does like to keep all my girls close around him, and I can soon tell if one has wandered off as he makes a right racket . I wonder if she is being lured by the crowing of the neighbourhood bad boy
coco
Lola one of my ex batts will go walkabout every chance she gets, the furthest I have found her is on someones doorstep about 200 yds down the road. Luckliy we live in a cul de sac but she could still get squished. I've fixed the Omlet netting so she can't squeeze under it now. At least all the neighbours know where she lives and all think its cute when she comes back when I call her.
legend21
I cant wait for the WIR to be built as on of my 6 exbatts always manages to escape, on Monday 2 nurses chapped my door to ask if it was my hen who was up at the hospital, I ran up and as soon as I shouted her she did her little Bo Derek on the beach run to me and was very happy to be scolded in my arms as we walked down the road. I am amazed she was not run over as the hospital is very busy. Now have to close the gates as soon as someone drives out and OH and DS have to phone when they are coming home so I open them again. How she escapes we dont know. Jackie
speckled hen
What naughty girls - I just knew I shouldn't let her watch the great escape I think we are going to get a cockerel to see if that settles her down as I am sure she is trying to get to him!! The next think is what sort of boy to get, we have a 2 year old daughter that loves the "cookooos" so really don't want a naughty boy that pecks. Guess I will post for some tips on this next. Thanks everyone
