Recommended Posts

Right... i had 3 girls originally and clearing their mess was never really a problem.... then i got 5 and that was ok aswell, bit more hard work but fine, now i have 10...

What do you do with your chicken poo/dirty hay etc from inside the coop and nesting box??

We dont currently have a composter, but that is defo the next thing on our list...

Have you thought of getting a couple of large bins and layering the poo etc with bokashi bran. After two weeks in the bin you can dig it into your flowerbeds and Veggie garden. It's such an easy way to compost. You can add your kitchen waste as well. 8)

Don't waste it! I have three composters which I fill in rotation with kitchen waste, grass clippings in summer, soft garden wase and the contents of the Eglu poo trays etc. It makes fabulous compost, especially if you use aubiose/hemcore - I'm currently using woodchip and that is going to take a lot longer to rot down, and I'm already regretting that decision. Last year I was able to fill my new raised beds with lovely compost, and the 'oldest' composter will be ready to empty this spring.

A friend has just asked me for a bag of chicken poop to put on his compost heap as an 'activator' because it speeds things up, so offer it to your neighbours/friends or Freecycle it!

I'd say we do the same, but i pick the poo out of their house so that their bedding can last an extra week instead of just turning it and poo is mixed with it. Then i put the poo in the compost bin and we add their bedding every now and again or we just bag it up to rot down >< Dont put too much bedding in the compost bin...we found it makes it dry and doesn;t rot quick enough

Cleared out the run yesterday and put the aubiose and 'poo' on freecycle. I am on theborders of two freecycle areas. From one there has been no interest and from the other they haven't put it on!!!

May have to take a drive down to some allotments during the week and see if i can find anyone who might want to take it off our hands... our two large compost bins are full.
