Leicester_H
Hi Having been off work sick for a couple of weeks, I have been having a cup of tea at around 4pm and watching 'Daily Cooks' Challenge' (http://www.itv.com/lifestyle/food/cooks/abouttheshow/default.html) One round of this is a 'beat the budget' round - they often use eggs - the price of these is listed as 12p each. Is there any way these could be free range eggs? I ask, because the programme is hosted by Antony Worrall-Thompson - who is a patron of BHWT. I try to avoid cruel eggs as far as possible (but I'm not perfect ) but should a patron of BHWT be seen to be 'squeeky clean' so to speak ? I was wondering about emailing him - but I thought I'd ask you wise lot first - you views please ? Thanks, H
bluekarin
As I haven't bought any eggs for a while I just had a quick check on Waitrose and Sainsburys to see how much a free range egg is each. In Waitrose the cheapest is 24p each and in Sainsburys its 16p each. Maybe contact the programme maker just to see where they get their eggs from and then if it comes back that they aren't free range then maybe a quick email to BHWT might be in order. I wouldn't bother contacting him directly though.
pistachio
The Sainsbury's free range eggs in a box of 18 work out at just under 14p each so it could be possible to get them at that price somewhere but probably only if you buy a huge box which most people wouldn't. Charlottechicken
I've been buying Happy Eggs whilst the girls have been off lay. They are around 26p each. Sounds like the programme uses battery eggs, is there a facility on the website to email them, pointing out Mr AWT's BHWT interest? As an aside, today in the supermarket near work, I was taking note of the items in front of mine on the conveyor belt, branded pasta, branded pasta sauce, organic olive oil and other branded or top of the range foodstuffs and......battery eggs Why??? I honestly think people just don't think at all about eggs - Even when mine were not laying I had such a job getting free range eggs that looked like free range - some I bought were so peely wally they could never have been free range at all and another place when I put the eggs from a wicker basket into the cartons I noticed a stamp on them - shouted to the man are these free range as he has hens outside and loads of posters about free range eggs he said oh no they are from the local dairy as mine are not laying = I put them all back and told him I was not amused as nowhere did they say they were not from his own free range chooks. So people just buy whats on the shelf somehow - bit apathetic really. I had a lady come up to me in tesco 2 weeks ago telling me the eggs were reduced to 15p/half a dozen wherupon I told her I had my own hens - she said Oh I dont eat eggs but I will do something with them and had 5 boxes in her trolley!!! why..... edited to say - I eventually found a local farmer who has free range chickens and bought from him - they were smaller than my eggs but every bit as good! Lewis
Please do Sarah! Its the same thing with Jamie Oliver ... he advertises Sainsbury's basics battery eggs on the advert!
Leicester_H
I have emailed ITV to ask them the status of the eggs used on this show. If they rely on bulk buying, that makes a bit of a nonsense of the budget round as the general public couldn't do that. I'll report back when/if they reply. Katy
Its the same thing with Jamie Oliver ... he advertises Sainsbury's basics battery eggs on the advert! Sainsbury's claim not to sell battery eggs any more and haven't for a year or more. http://www.jsainsbury.co.uk/cr/index.asp?pageid=35 Their basics eggs are now 'barn eggs' although I agree that this does not necessarily mean the welfare levels are much better.
