Considering getting a WIR

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

Well, this year I'm going to be getting a trio/quatet(sp) of call ducks. We have a massive plot, sizing 19m(62ft)x15m(50ft) approx. Most of the will be grassed. We were going to let the ducks roam freely, but they'd fly over the fence. So I want to get a WIR. My dad insists on building, so we can go it how we want :D . I was just wondering how big you think it should be. We want to have a little duck house in there, a small pond for them, and just the rest spare, with over stuff etc.

Also, I'm not sure what to put on the floor, suggestions? Also, if any has any tips of building these, It'd be gret for you too share them :P

Cheers,

 In that size area I would have 40 Call ducks not 4!!

Excuse me, I'm slightly obsessed! Anyway...

You have 2 options...

Option 1

Build a run roughly 4mx4m and decide where you are going to put there pond. Once decided slab a 1m around the pond and underneath it. Leave the rest of the ground as grass and as soon as they have worn it away ( Probably about 3-4 months) lay woodchip down as ducks like this as they can forage around for bugs etc. In the summer the grass will be fine but in the winter it will probably all die off. If you have a covered roof on the run this will prevent it from getting muddy.

Option 2

Build two runs 3mx3m each. Have the duck house in one corner on a couple of slabs and have their pond on a slab as well. Keep the ducks in one run for roughly 3-4months while you reseed the other run and let it rest. Swap the ducks over and continue to do this throughout the year which will give them almost constant access to grass which my Calls love.

You could combine the two options and have a summer run and winter run. The summer run being a large grassy run with a pond and house each on a couple of slabs and the winter run a large totally slabbed run which will be easy to clean in the winter and no mud!

Hope this helps :)

Your a hero!:oops: I'm going to speak to my dad, about it now, show him what you wrote, and see what he thinks. I'll let you know on the outcome.

Thanks very much!

Or 3 runs! A mini run in the middle with the house and pond in it, sandwiched between the winter and summer runs on either side, with gated access  Or is that what you mean Tom123? (sorry, butting in! But I love runs!)

No probs :) Let me know how you get on, Calls are the best, you'll never regret it

Spoke to dad, and showed him what you wrote, and preferred Option 2, same as me, so did my mum. So, we are most probaly going to do it, mum said she'd speak to dad about it, but that always means yes

And were going ahead with the sebrights. So good news all round :D

A question for the WIR, what size pond for the ducks do you think?

Thanks very much for your help.

Another very good idea, my dad also thinks this is a great idea, high possibility, thanks very much for your input.

"TuttiTom Teamwork" good name eh?

No problem and I'm glad that your parents like the idea :)

Good luck with the sebrights as well

Pond size wise, I would say a 1mx1m pond would be fine for 4 Calls. I have 2 large shallow tub trugs which are fantastic

:D

Thanks, wouldn't have thought it about without you

About the size I was thinking, thanks!

 That's a good idea actually

A totally slabbed small run with pond and house with 2 large grass runs either side, summer and winter :)

:D

I was thinking a 2x3m middle bit, then two 3x3m sections each side.

One of them with grass, the other slabbed, with bark or something over it?

Not with ducks as they tend to eat them and they will get in the water. Wood chips or gravel but this isn't ideal

:)

I may just grass it, and make it grow long, like really long, so they don't ruin it! Getting very excited now

I bought some eggs off ebay, long time ago, but she said they would be infertile, and they were, so she took them back. She's meant to send us some febuary sometime. There chocalate bibbed! :P

I love there markings :D I also like magpie call ducks, but there quite rare.

Anyway, thanks for ALL your help, and if I have anymore questions, I think I know where to ask

So thanks for your help, going off now, bye!

Cheers,
