Chook n Boo Mum
Now, if you bought a pack of salmon fillets professing to be boneless and skinless, would you expect to have to remove a fishbone from your son's throat....stuck in like a thorn, right in the back No I didn't think so, but apparently if they are advertised as boneless but with a small disclaimer that they might have bones in, then that's ok........................sorry, but to my mind "boneless" should be boneless, not "maybe boneless".......the lady in the shop who was speaking on behalf of the manager (who was baking due to staff shortages )actually mentioned that it was a trade descriptions matter. We are in catering & know full well that a fish is very difficult to get totally guaranteed boneless, and we have let it slide on many an occasion when bones haven't caused any damage, but this really shook us up.......we've been offered some sweets for DS as an apology. Personally I think the packaging should be changed to remove the boneless part..or am I over-reacting Sha x
Couperwife
I think the boneless part needs looking at oh poor son, hope he is ok , maybe a trip to the docs / A&E (to push the point of the boneless thing) something soothing to drink. hope you are ok too, it must have been really frightening (((hugs))) cathy x
Chucky Mama
Cripes, have you got it out. It is so irritating having a bone lodged. I have had to remove a couple but I had some doctor style forceps otherwise it would have been impossible.
Looney
That's scary I bought a quick kids meal for Bogwoppit the other week when we were on the move and needed something instantly. It was a fish something-or-other and there was a sticker on the lid saying that although they try to remove all bones they suggest parents double check before giving to their child. Not a bone in sight but at least they warned me! Hope you have all got over the shock.
Cooks
just seen this, that would ahve given me quite a fright, well done you.
Chook n Boo Mum
I think/hope I got all the bone out, he says it's till sore where it went in, so a "pinprick" kind of soreness rather than there still being something in situ as it were ........trouble is he's at boarding school & is known for being a wingebag in the infirmary, so is just as likely to be sent away with a flea in his ear .....his house master & mum are both aware, so hopefully they'll keep an eye......I had to ask this evening how it was, so it must be ok really! He was more concerned about how long it took me to get home last night after the car fiasco. He was very scared last night though, but managed to stay calm throughout, thankfully. I haven't accepted the sweets apology verbally, I nearly suggested another destination for them but refrained This year is becoming a year of firsts...first seizure for DH & first ride in an ambo as a result.....first bone in throat for any of us, & first removal by me......first recovery by AA & ride in a big yellow lorry Sha x
Space Chick
Its a tricky call that, I think there is a difference between fish where they haven't bothered to de-bone and "boneless" where there is a chance that some bones may remain. However, as a customer, I want to know that it is hopefully bone free, but the risk is always there.
bluekarin
That is an awful thing to happen and although sore, I am glad he is okay. But to be honest, even if the packaging says it's boneless/ free, I still check. Better to err on the side of caution. The kids terrify me when eating fish as they wolf it down and I am shouting slow down, look at it and eat small amounts! Do they listen? Do they heck. Maybe I'll get them to read your post about your DS. Maybe all fish packaging should say 'de boned but may contain small bones' and not boneless as the assumption is no bones at all. Snowy
Oooh poor son! We had exactly the same with youngest son and a boneless salmon fillet - the only one who got the bone was 4 yr old stuck right in his throat Took him to A&E who hadn't a clue. In the end he ate some bread which dislodged it. My dad then told me that that is why you should always eat bread with fish, to clear the bones. They then dissolve in the stomach as they are mostly cartilage. I'll know next time, but it was very scary!
Valkyrie
That's what my mum always says. Murray had a fishbone stuck a long time ago. He's the worst kind of patient at the best of times, so off to A&E. Luckily they just found a scratch, so it must have been washed down with the bread that I made him eat, but he was coughing for ages after he had the all clear. sadietoo
Poor you...I bought smoked haddock fillet this w/e and both oh and ds complained about finding a bone although I had gone through it to double check too My rant is about Green and Black's cereal bars...cherry and apricot stylee...after almost breaking my tooth I read the small print on the box, and apparently although they try to ensure all cherry stones are removed they can't guarantee that they all are...so that's alright then..... Chook n Boo Mum
I rang Consumer Direct yesterday & they rang me back today...they are passing the report on to the local Trading Standards office who will decide whether the disclaimer is sufficient in law or if there is a case to answer. As I pointed out they wouldn't dare put nutless on an item then add a disclaimer, so what's the different with bones, I assume "Ooops, word censored!"ody is allergic to bones, but one stuck in the throat is very uncomfortable and upsetting......we will see Poor you...I bought smoked haddock fillet this w/e and both oh and ds complained about finding a bone although I had gone through it to double check too My rant is about Green and Black's cereal bars...cherry and apricot stylee...after almost breaking my tooth I read the small print on the box, and apparently although they try to ensure all cherry stones are removed they can't guarantee that they all are...so that's alright then..... I must admit that on all my plum/damson jam jars I do put a huge note about the odd stone having slipped through the net..bigger than the jam sticker actually !!! Chucky1
Hi Sha I read about your breakdowns in the car, and sympathise with your recent run of bad luck. My own very minor rant is that I now find myself described as a "Frequent Layer" and so I am now more inclined to comment more often, even if only to say me too. As I pointed out they wouldn't dare put nutless on an item then add a disclaimer .... Actually I think they do do that
chelsea
How scary I do agree it should be re-worded to "part boned"....it's either boneless or it's not! Quite simple really.
Guest
I had a lovely salad in my work's restaurant one day and nearly broke a tooth on a lemon pip. I just remember thinking "wow, they use REAL lemons, cool!" I think, with any food, biter beware!
