Tombull10
I've had my 3 ex batts for 1 year. Just recently felicity (the smallest of the 3 who took nearly a year to grow her feathers back) has become very poorly. Over the last week she has become very lethargic and sluggish, barely shows any interest in food even though i went out and bought her favourite layers mash to make her feel better, seems to have lost weight, has very runny white poos and her comb has turned a purple colour around the edge. I don't know what to do to help her. The other 2 seem perfectly normal and healthy so i don't think it's anything contageous. Any tips or advice or ideas about what it might be would be greatfully recieved. Thanks, A very worried Tom x
ClaireG
She doesn't sound well at all Tom. I'd pop her to the vets.
Fur 'n' Feathers
You say her comb has turned purple. This is an indicator of a heart problem (like humans having bluish lips). It is more common in hybrids bred for profuse laying. Our Kilo died of this last month. A trip to the vets is a good idea, but be prepared for the possible outcome. Kilo spent her last few days in the warmth in an open box and appeared to just fade away. The most important thing we felt was to make she she didn't die of dehydration. The morning she died she had stopped drinking. Sorry to sound a little negative & hope there might be a treatable reason for her condition. ISCA
I agree with the others, I think an urgent vets visit is needed. Hope she rallies through this.
Olly
Sorry to say I agree with the above - and as an ex-batt at around 2 years old, unfortunately it may just be that her time has come. Hope the vet will be able to advise. I'm going to pop this into 'Chicken Clinic', as you're more likely to get helpful replies in there. Chucky Mama
Any news?
Tombull10
Hi all, thanks for all the advice. Sadly I took her to the vets today and she had to be put to sleep. The vet said it was to do with her egg production system or a tumour as there was a large lump on her underside. For the best I'm sure as I'd never want her to be in any pain but I'm far more upset than I thought I'd be! She's always been my favourite as she was so small and weedy and bottom of the pecking order! Thanks again. Tom x
