Puffin
One of my chickens has lost some feathers on its neck - where it's beak would reach if it bent it's head down, at first I thought it was moulting strangely but now it has quite bare patch - I have sprayed anti-peck spray. I think it is doing this itself as I have never seen it being pecked and it seems quite happy. Any ideas? Thanks
Falkor
Hi Puffin! One of my Orps has similar feather loss around her neck but I know this is due to her being a stubborn broody and not moving her big feathery bum when the others want to lay so they try to "encourage" her to move . She was covered in purple spray and anti peck spray and is now unbroody. New quils are forming already. If you think she is doing it herself you could bumper bit her? It could be the others doing it whilst you are not looking or whilst they are in the house at night/early morning. If bumper biting her doesn`t improve it maybe bit them all? PS. Polly Pom Pom is doing great! She is a fully intergrated member of my bantam flock and she has re-feathered (although the new feathers are pure white and not gold laced. Fingers crossed they will come true when she moults next)
beulah59
I wonder if she's planning to go broody?
JanTheDiver
I have noticed my Black Rock has a bald patch on her neck too, it's not red and doesn't looked pecked. She is usually the pecker so maybe one of the others she normally attacks is getting their own back
Puffin
Well I am keeping an eye on her and have sprayed again with anti-peck spray. It's not bleeding or anything to am not turning to the purple spray yet (she is a white chicken!) Glad to hear Polly is ok - the kids were asking about her the other day. Strange about her white feathers although I think she had a couple before but on her pom pom!
Puffin
oh dear... it seems I spoke too soon - I went out to top up food etc and check for eggs and poor Peppa's lovely white feather's are now spotted with blood from her comb. So one of them has obviously had a good at her. I have tried spraying her with purple spray but am wary of getting it in her eyes - they are free ranging at the moment so hopefully she will be ok - she seems fine and was making a mad dash for the leftover mashed potatoes I just gave them. Falkor
Hi When spraying combs I get OH to hold onto the chook from behind, I stand in front and put my left hand over the chooks face so that the comb in between my fingers and then I spray. OK....so I have to walk about and go to work with a purple hand but it works
