Chucky Mama
I went to Cesar Millan in Birmingham last night. The first half of the 'seminar' was great. He talked a lot of sense and was very entertaining. Unfortunately he was a bit rambling and repetative in the second half and started to 'preach' a bit about life in general and padded it all out a bit to fill the time. Has anyone else been or going? Seagazer
My friend and also my SIL have got tickets to see him at the O2. I'm sort of in two minds about him. I think he looks like he works miracles with some of the dogs on his programme, but I disagree with some of the pronged collars he uses sometimes. I know he's also used shock collars too. I have a dog walking friend who uses one of these, I understand why she has it, her dog keeps eating sticks and having operations but it still makes me feel very uneasy. I agree with him about treating them as dogs and not children though - although Cookie is a bit spoilt - she's a dog and not my child. txswanie
We don't like Cesar Milan in out house. We auditioned for his show (in Los Angeles), our lovely beagle boy Stan is quite crazy with strange dogs. We went to see them and they had us make a video of Stan "in action" and then said that they wouldn't be using him as he would be "too difficult for the show" So who does he have on the show, easy fixes??? Snowy
Since getting my springies I have spent a certain amount of time on springer forums ( ) and his methods seem to be very unpopular with a lot of dog trainers. A lot of it is because of his ideas on the dog as a pack animal, which is OK if you have a pack of dogs, but not always relevant to the dog/human relationship. As well as his use of e and prong collars.
The Dogmother
Not a fan myself, and don't ever try his dominance thing on a hunting dog like a sight hound - it really hacks them off. I know of 3 people who follow his training, all of them met while dog walking. All of them have very submissive and fearful dogs. Personally, I find that every dog is diffferent and it's important to get into their way of thinking and recognise their triggers before you can start training them, this si especially so with a saluki lurcher like mine . Seagazer
I met someone yesterday who is a dog behaviourist and he was not impressed by Cesar's methods. He thinks he has success because of his own 'aura' if you like, his personality. I think there are probably lots of dogs out there that are being kicked in the side because that is what it looks like he does and its shown to work on the tv. I enjoy watching his show, he clearly loves dogs but its not the way I would want to train my dog.
