Old Speckled Hen
I live in a rural setting in a small hamlet of perhaps twenty houses strung out over half a mile. Our immediate neighbours have a rookery 10 feet from the front of their house (well the tree is 10 feet, the rookery maybe thirty feet up ) The bird are VERY noisy and start croaking at least an hour before it's light. (are you beginning to get my drift here?) Do you think a cockerel might be less loud? Do you think they might notice him less in the morning being drowned out by crows? chickyhazel
Some cockerels are louder than others, and I think most cockerels would be drowned out by the rooks unless they start cawing earlier. My friends cockerel makes almost no noise, so if you get one like that you've got no problem anyway. I think you would get away with having a cockerel so my advice is - go for it! Just don't get two, or they fight so much... Hazel, Ranger, Audi, Porsche, RIP Chestnut, +1 not named Noodle x1 x1
moochoo
Although I have only had "dinner" cockerels, I live in a suburban built up area and haven't had any complaints about the doodle-dooing that's being going on. If I lived in a rural location I think it would be essential to have a lovely boy to look after my girlies. Go for it!
Redwing
I live in a rural area and the sound of the sheep lambing in the field opposite has drowned out all noise from the 10 cockerels in my garden recently later in the spring the birdscarer starts up and then in the summer the tractors harvesting throughout the night so there is always a lot of noise in the country - not to mention your rookery People expect it (normally ) so I wouldnt worry too much
Daphne
Slight note of caution - do you think they might set him off; birdy competition and all that! I don't know what breed you were thinking of, but I will just say my orp is the loudest thing on the planet although a neighbour has a wimpy pekin who sounds like a rusty gate.
