Scoobs
I'm a newbie to chicken keeping and just building a WIR. Looking forward to getting some ladies after Easter but can anyone recommend a good supplier in the West Midlands area. I'm in Birmingham but can travel. Also, do the suppliers vaccinate the hens normally or do I have to do that? Thanks Empty, awaiting ladies.
Redwing
A quick whizz down the M40 will take you to Cotswold Chickens just outside Banbury, they have good healthy hybrid hens which are vaccinated Pure breeds from most suppliers are not vaccinated but this is not necessarily a problem, its generally acknowledged and widely acceptaed and doesnt cause many problems so dont be overly worried about getting unvaccinated hens Wernlas in Shropshire are worth a journey to look at the different breeds available, they do fall down a little on customer service sometimes and there have been some breed mix ups from there reported however they do have a wide range of pure breed birds that are healthy and reasonably well bred (their pure breeds are actually vaccinated, but like I said dont worry too much about this) Avoid the Domestic Fowl Trust
shelley8179
have to ask why you said avoid the domestic fowl trust? I was going to go there.
Squawk
Hi Scoobs I live near Birmingham too. I agree with Redwing. I got 3 chickens from Cotswold chickens and the lady there was very helpful and my chickens are very healthy. I've been to Wernlas and I wasnt that impressed with their set-up. Although I suppose it would be worth a visit if you're interested in pure breeds as they have a very wide variety there. Merrydale Poultry are near Leicester, so not too far away. I havent been there myself but their website is good with some handy advice. Perhaps someone else on the forum has had chickens from there? ..lay a little egg for me
Not sure what the problem with the DFT is, but we got our 4 from there 2 years ago now and apart from snuffles when they first arrived, they have been very healthy indeed. However, am thinking of going to Newland Grange (Malvern) for my next chickens.
