kerryegg
Have been suffering with a painful thumb for some weeks. Dr said glaucosamine may help, i don't think it has and I don't want to keep on taking paracetamol and ibuprofin any more than i have to due to mild asthma and tablets for high blood pressure.Virtually one handed now, can't peel veg etc or even write without pain. Currently waiting for X-rays but wondered about aquapuncture. Any ideas please? thanks.
Janepie33
A friend at work took glaucosamine for her joints and she said that it really helped. She noticed a big difference if she didn't take it. Hope your thumb feels better soon.
Lesley
Glucosamine takes around 3 months to take effect though - so don't expect instant results. My mother used something like a TENS/infra red pen which is useful for small joints like the thumb.....I've no idea where she got it from. Tiggy
did you fall or strain your thumb? if it is an injury it could take 6-8 weeks to get better

You also need to take a high dose - over 1500mg according to the clinical trials that were able to show any benefit.
Blackrocksrock
It is worth acupuncture as if it works on you its magic - Ihad it for frozen shoulder and it was such a relief the hospital had a nine month waiting list for a cortisone injection at that time non urgent! and I cancelled and had acupuncture instead - go for it but make sure registered with proper acupuncture bodies
kerryegg
Thanks for all the advice. I will keep on with the glaucosamin and seriosly consider aqupunture. It's slighty better than it was but I still take paracetamol and try not to use it. thanks again.
Snowy
I get the impression that you have only seen you GP the once about this? Sorry if I'm wrong, but it would be worth going back again to get it rechecked to confirm that it is definitely arthritic pain. There are other possibilities and it may be that there are other treatment options available if this one isn't working. Your GP won't know if you don't go back and tell him. kerryegg
Thanks for your concern Snowy. I originally had blood tests due to painful hands particularly my right hand and thumb. They were returned no inflamatory disease so GP said wear and tear and said he couldn't advice me to take it but some patients said glaucosamin helped. Then my thumb became very painful, couldn't even touch it without pain so I want back to my GP and X-ray appointment arrived today for 30/03/10. Meanwhile I am not using thumb if I can help it and wearing wrist support really to remind me to be careful. still thinking about aqupunture but not good with needles. Thanks again for replies everyone.

So dont worry.
Woodcat
There are several things that could be helping to exacerbate your problem. Quite often muscles in your hands can hurt when you have tension in your upper back and neck particually if you are already susceptible to it as it sounds like you are. When you do computer work is your back supported, is your monitor to one side rather than straight on. Do you tend to watch telly not straight on to it? All of these sound really small but can make a huge difference to it. You could try some gentle stretches or yoga to try and relax these muscles if you are tense up there. I have very bad wrist and hand pain if i do any of these things and a host of others. You haven't said which hand it is if it's the hand you use a computer mouse in try having a single balled up sock under the wrist when you use your mouse it may help
