just got back from Wernlas with a couple of new additions

a Speckled Sussex and a Buff Laced Wyandotte both about 30 weeks old

both have been feather pecked the Sussex the worst of the two

question vaseline or purple spray or leave alone?

they will be confined to quarters for at least 2 weeks unless they have other ideas the sussex as already tried to escape in the time it took to get the buff out of the carry box

and yes I know you want photos I'll add them as soon as I've taken some if my camera works with windows 7

Can't advise on the feather plucking - no experience, sorry .

Of course we'll need to judge whether they are photogenic or not (haven't found one bird who isn't yet of course!)

It might have been another bird pecking them - keep an eye on the feathers and if they look like they are about to do Transylvanian impersonations, give them a spray of antipeck. Not sure whether to spray asap just as a precaution anyway, but they'll be a little stressed at first, so might be better to wait. Oh REDWING!

Keep any eye on the today and tomorrow and if it is them pecking each other them spray both of them with anti-peck spray and see how it goes. It was probably another bird though if both of them are hen-pecked

I am a newbie with no hens yet, so no actual experience of the problem, but from what I have read purple spray not only acts as an antiseptic agent but disguises the redness of wounds and so makes the pecked area less attractive to other hens (as hens are attracted to anything the colour red), giving the wounds a chance to heal anf feathers to grow again.

 

Hopefully you did not bring the pecking hen home with you too

I think it looks worst than it is there doen't look like any skin damage. it's just the amount of feathers that are gone or damaged thats a shock .I think it's safe to say that folks have had ex bat with less feather loss

at the moment the Dotte look friendly enough towards the sussex who I think was at the bottom of the pecking order but she doen't get out of the way of the dotte as if she's scared of her so that's a good thing but you would say they are best mates just yet.

they don't run for cover when my other lot come looking or when big red cyclone or road runner started screaming the place down they didn't join in either

 

p.s one laid an egg in the night/early morning found the remains when I opened up the shell was a bit on the thin side and the dotte had a nice eggy vest this morning

I thourght it's about time I posted an update

first I looks like netheter of them are feather peckers so thats a result

both are laying allthough Faith as only laid thin shelled eggs untill today

Hope is a gobby mare and a screamer Faith is just load

they seem to be settling in ok they aren't scared by my 5 at all but that'll probably change we they get to FR together, which they look lilke they want to do so I'vr took the devide out so they can explore part of the main run while the others are out in the garden and all they do is stand by the opening as if the panel is still there

they did about 15 mins (and a bit of wheat) after my post. I had to get the other 5 in out of the rain bribery is the only thing that works when they want to stay out to play it workswith the new girls as well it seems

found out today that aleast one of them has worms found a poo with 2 worms in both about 2 inch long so they're going to be flubed this week starting tomorrow

they're still a little nervous and a tad gobby around egg laying time

and Hope the half plucked speckled sussex has started to grow feathers on her tail and it looks like a few pins are just under the skin on her back so things are looking up

faiths now laying proper shelled eggs to loks like she's on 2 days on 1 off but I'm not sure she's been laying long as her eggs aren't that big about 50 grams give or take
