jomeena
Is there anyone who keeps more than 2 chooks in a eglu, and if so how long do they freerange for ? I have 2 girls and would like another 2 but can only let them out for 2 one hour sessions a day. We cant fit a extension on the run as where we placed it there isnt space. Is my only option to get another eglu ?
Lewis
Lots of people have 2 and more I have 2 banties in mine, but some people keep 4 (sometimes more) ... you're limited really by the run space, not the eglu space In a standard run I think you might be pushing it a little bit but FR time will help Could fit 2 banties in there? jomeena
Can you mix normal size hens with the bantam size ?
Olly
Some people have mixed them, but it's not always successful. I think two hens in a standard Eglu is your limit, it's the run size not the Eglu size. I have five sleeping in mine, but they're in a 2m x 3m walk-in run - I can't let them out to free range unless I am there to supervise. Have you thought about a Cube? The footprint isn't a lot bigger than the Eglu, although again you'll be limited by the size of the run, as to how many hens you can have, the run is a lot bigger though as there's more height in it. Toots
This looks like its stepping into chicken math territory! you could build a WIR and expand sidways instead of just forwards like an extension would allow!
jomeena
I like the idea of a WIR but OH not much of a builder. will have to look into it.
Roobaloo
My two girls take up about a third of the space in the Eglu and Toph is quite a large lady! We couldn't get an Eglu run as it was too wide for where we needed to put the Eglu itself (it was the fox-proof 'skirt' than made it slightly too wide!) We then were planning on building out own run, nipped down to B&Q and the materials would've cost us about £60... ...so I went on ebay and found a bigger run for £80! Lewis
I had banties and LF mixed, and plan to do the same when the chicks hatch Just need to take intros slowly. A WIR is probably the way to go You can buy ready made panels for a good price - mine came from West Hagley Aviaries, can click the photo in my signature (1st time I've been able to say that! )
