Tobermory
Hello One of our chickens, Mabel, has been making a lot of noise this evening. She sometimes does this in a morning and we have previously had a complaint made about it to the council! Making this noise at this time (about an hour ago) though is a new thing. She is standing up quite tall -neck extended and clucking very loudly. There has been a drop in egg production - we have only been having one egg a day for the last few days which is unusual for our chickens. Is there anything wrong with her? Is there anything we can do to stop her from doing this? Thanks in advance for any help! Tobermory
Pikey
Mine make a lot of noise when they've laid an egg and/or when something has frightened them......almost like a warning. Is there a strange noise or perhaps a cat/rat freaking her out a bit?? To stop them I either give them treats....something like corn so they have to peck around or go out myself if its one of my cats in the garden. Can't really think what else it could be....perhaps someone else will come along with some more ideas.
Tobermory
Thank you for your reply. I don't think there was anything out there at the time. There are a couple of cats around here but they never seem to bother the chickens. We kept going out to them but it didn't seem to help. In the end, they were heading into the eglu for the night and so I just shut them in a bit sooner than normal. I hope she isn't going to do this on a regular basis because we will get into trouble with our neighbours again...
Plum
She's probably just seen a twig the wrong shape. Mine do this if alarmed by wrong shape twigs, cats, some birds etc.,
sjp
if you start giving treats when they are screaming they're lungs out it can make it worst as they then start to scream to get extra treats and then the others join in. been there done that as they say
